Lucky Dog Pass

O.K. I know this has been discussed but, I keep coming back to thoughts I have about this pass.

Why is it that it is the first car behind the leader that is 1 lap down that gets its lap back? Why isn't it just the first car behind the leader any amount of laps down that gets a lap back. When racing back to the caution, it was most likely the car closest to the leader that got a lap back. It wasn't the car 2 turns behind that was one lap down that got a lap back.

With the way it is we would not have seen Robby Gordon come from 4 laps down to lead the race like we did at Bristol (or was it richmond).

Some may argue why give a car down 30 laps one of those laps back? how is that going to help him? Well, it may not help him, but he was the one that was closest to the leader and would have been able to challenge to get a lap back.

The rule does both good and bad. Good part is, they can get to the wrecked car quicker without having to worry about getting hit by other cars. Bad part is, it takes some good cars out of the race. You made a good point with Robby, we'll probably never see a great run like that again.

I've got to agree with Dino on this one...

One of the arguments made by NASCAR and the drivers before the "no racing to the caution rule" was implemented was that if you took the away ability of cars laps down to get laps back that they would race the leader much harder on restarts.

When NASCAR implemented the "no racing to the caution rule" they stated that their purpose with the lucky dog portion was to give back some of the ability that they had taken away.

The luck dog rule stinks as it is being implemented. A car 3 laps down because of a flat under green that is racing the race leader (and going just as fast) stands no chance of getting back in the race, but a driver who was lapped because he was just that much slower and is 3/4 of a lap behind the leader can get it back.

I purpose that the rule be implemented as it is the IRL. No racing to the cuation. If the leader pits and you chose not to pit (bascially if you are going to get lined up in front of the leader) then when the 1 to go signal is given you are waived past the apce car and allowed to catch the end of the field.

This makes it a strategy decision and not a gift.

This rule was put into effect so fast that they never even thought of everything that could result. However, having done so now, I suspect they will try to tweak the rule over the off season. I wouldn't look for much of a change though.

All I can say I don't like the lucky Dog thing. They need to do something.
