We keep hearing of birds fowling jet engines. Why can't the engines have mesh covers similar to industrial fans? I'm sure there must be some reason for not doing something that appears obvious to me.

That mesh would get sucked into the engine at cruising speed. You're talking about a 'clearance' area of 25 feet in front and 200 feet to the rear at ground idle speed. Plus...at the speed that plane was flying when the bird was ingested, the mesh wouldn't have helped, anyway.

What happened to Flight 1549 - ABC News

Amazing that everyone survived, and only one serious injury. Hats off to New York's finest once again. Once more, when faced with certain death, New York's people harked up the courage to do whatever it takes to save their lives and others.

The captain stayed on and went up and down the ailes to make sure everyone got off alive risking his own life to do so.

Awesome story.

I was at Cecil Field and watched a C-5 suck up 4 egrets coming in for a landing...Six bird, in total, bought the farm. The other two hit the nose-gear light and the main gear on the right side...

Amen to that!! I sat here watching the whole thing unfold yesterday with my stomach in my throat. It was amazing how they they got the people out of the plane and how fast help arrived to get them all to safety. I saw a short clip on the news earlier with a passenger in the hospital showing he was wearing the captain's shirt since he gave it to him when he was cold. I hope no one ends up with pneumonia from being out in the cold. It was just phenomenal to see them rescue everyone so quickly.
