NEW YORK (CNN) -- A major power outage simultaneously struck dozens of cities in the United States and Canada late Thursday afternoon.

Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto, Ontario; and Ottawa, Ontario. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

State officials said the Niagara-Mohawk power grid was overloaded. The grid provides power for New York and stretches into Canada. The officials said the outage is a natural occurrence and not related to terrorism.

Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street were shut down. All area airports and the Long Island Railroad were also affected. The airports were operating on back-up power and operations were reported to be normal, officials said.

The New York City Police Department said they were trying to determine what happened.

Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

It doesnt affect me, I'm nestled safe in Las Vegas Nevada.

I do feel for the New Yorkers, a tense situation there especially in the post 9/11 era.

Not quite sure exactly where, but Dee and 4x are in Ohio, so is pbunch. It won't effect me, I'm here in the great state of Texas!!!

I was in NY for the last blackout. Glad I'm not there now.

The news just said that a fire at a power station in NYC put a load on the grid and it failed.

Good to see that it wasn't terrorism.

Hope everyone will get their power back soon and not take days like it did last time.

I don't know, could get claustrophobic .(damn thats a big word and I don't think I spelled it right)

It hit me. I live about an hour or so north of NYC. I live in the "woods" so I have a generator. Started it up. Have full power except for central A/C. Guess I'll rough it for a bit.

I am curious if I can get more gas? Might have to take a ride and see.

Dee lives in a pretty rural part of Ohio(Even though I didnt know their WERE rural parts of Ohio)---cant remember where right now,but I know they have farmers there. Not sure about 4x or pbunch though.Hope all those folks are ok...I spoke with Dee this morning, but she usually hollers back by now and she hasnt yet.Damned weird how this can happen in this day and time.Down south here it isnt a big deal....but up north they apparently have a lot of problems with this kind of thing. :(

Hey glad to see you back to posting...Yes I live in the country and there are farmers in Ohio! I was driving right around that time, so didn't really know anything happened till I just got home and my clocks were blinking. I am fine, thanks for the concern.

Your clock was blinking!I figured you were trapped in an elevator somewhere.Glad you are ok Dee.

Not as bad as the ones stuck in the subways!
Rather be stuck in a subway. They let you out of the cars and you walk along the catwalk to the next station.

In an elevator, you aren't going anywhere for awhile until they can get that car moved to a floor and open the doors.

Hey Dee, glad your with us and not trapped in an elevator somewhere. B)

I'll add my - Glad you're okay Dee. Hope you weren't too "inconvenienced"! Clocks blinking?

Guido, my thoughts on being stuck in the subway thing was referencing the abosolute "oh my gawd" to the fact that they have stagnant water, roaches, rats and gawd knows what else down there!!!!! But then you have the being stuck in an elevator with someone who has really bad B.O. Oh my gawd!!! which one is worse!!?????

Not stuck in any elevator, I was down the road from a grain elevator, though, can you believe it 97 we have those here in Ohio! :p

He Maj....what's a few rats and roaches?

You are right about being stuck in an elevator with some sweaty person that doesn't believe in deodorant.

I've been stuck in an elvator once and on a packed subway train several times in the summer. Not fun when some of the folks standing up can't take the heat and start dropping like flies.

Nope.... moved out of NYC in '76 and I don't miss it a bit. Love it here in Carolina.

Never been stuck in an elevator, but just riding in an elevator with.......just grosses me out thinking about it.!!!

The Carolinas are beautiful country. Moved to Texas from Middle Tennessee some 22 years ago. Love living here, and love to visit back home. My Dad lives just south of Knoxville, about 30 miles from the Carolina line.

Maryville area, Maj?

Real pretty country.

Always enjoy my trips through Tn.

I've visited New York once before when I was a kid but I cant remember really much of it. Judging from it's large population I'm just throwing out a number here maybe 8,000,000, it's gotta suck being one of those people crowding to get onto the Ferrys to get back onto the New York or New Jersey mainland. That huge crowd I see waiting for the ferrys to pick em up on TV kinda reminds me of everyone trying to get out of the track after a race.

You got it, Maryville! I love the mountains! Grew up in Nashville, tho'. Well, one of the 'burbs, Antioch. That's where the rest of the family is. My sister and I are the only ones that are left here in Texas. I'm in the DFW area and she is just south of Houston.

I had family in Houston for a few years, I hated going down there to visit. Way to much concrete for this country boy.

Maj, DFW area is great as long as you go through it during the non-rush hour. :D

Anytime I travel out that way, I schedule my time to avoid that parking lot on I-20.

I went to basic training with a fellow from Garland and visited his place back around '68. Didn't get back that way until about 2 years ago and I had no idea where I was at......... that whole metro area grew so much in 30 years.

I am facinated by the desolation and barreness of west Texas. Always enjoy my trip out that way when I go to Phoenix or Vegas.

Wow....... talk about thread drift.

Thanks for the concern all...We were out of power for most of the day and half of the night. It was pretty rough trying to sleep in 80+ degrees and muggy as anything. But, we got through it. I'm sure a bunch of stuff in the fridge went bad, but it wasn't out nearly as long as last time. Thanks again for the concern :salute:

Our power finally came back on here this morning at 10 oclock. My area(about 25 miles north of Syracuse) was one of the last in upstate NY to get our power back on. We are supposed to have rolling blackouts for the next few days.
