Here is a very small excerpt from an article I found on the Drudge report. The full article can be found at http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A...A9342-2002Dec18
U.S. Social Security May Reach To Mexico
Such talk has caused growing concern at the State Department and on Capitol Hill. A memo from the State Department's assistant secretary for consular affairs, Maura Harty, to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell even indicated the White House National Economic Council has raised objections. As one State Department official put it, "the staffing and budget implications haven't been fully worked out, but we're thinking about it."
To the Mexican government and immigrant advocates, such concerns are beside the point.
"How can [the U.S. government] say this is too costly?" Blanco asked. "This is money these workers paid into the Social Security system. This is their money."
Before I say anything, let me just say that I know that not all of us are going to have the same opinions about this, but please lets not have an all out war. With that being said, please allow me to share my two cents......
I was listening to the Michael Regan (Pres Regan's son) syndicated talk radio show not too long ago. He had a guest, and I apologize for not remembering her name, or the book she wrote, but she's done exstensive research on all faucets of immigration. One of the topics they talked about was how much money illegal immigrants cost our medical system. They get into a car wreck after crossing the border, guess where they go ? To the hospital. Guess who pays that bill ? Hard working tax paying citizens, ie you and I. They cost our health system billions a yr. The lady had actual numbers and facts showing how some hospitals have either closed their doors or at least their trauma centers due to fact that they couldn't afford to keep them running, in large part because of the burden put upon them by illegal immigrants. Of course this is happening in areas where immigration is rampant, like Fl, TX, Ca.... I will search and try to find her name and book to back up these claims, but let me say this... If this is the case, and I believe it to be, don't you think it's a little self righteous of Blanco to say that it's "their money" ? The way I see it is that it's OUR money that pays for their medical bills, and the welfare that supports the children they have after crossing the border. Seems to me that this SS money that they're wanting should be kept by us as a kind of payment towards what we already pay out to support the illegals. Some of you might argue that the article talks about mexicans that were working here legally and that it is their money.... I work here legally and I had to pay for the illegals.... my grandfather worked everyday for almost 50 yrs (had the strongest work ethic of anyone i've ever seen) but he had to get a part time job after retirement because he wasn't getting much from SS. He wasn't able to save money while he was working for retirement because my grandmothers prescriptions were so exspensive. But yet the illegals can get free prescriptions and healthcare from our tax dollars, and now mexicans are asking for our SS money. SS money which will more than likely not be there when I retire... I'm done venting, and I'm now prepared to take my beating by those of you that disagree with me...
