NASCAR to mandate neurocognitive baseline testing beg. in 2014 in name of concussion prevention ->

NASCAR announced today that beginning in 2014, the sanctioning body will mandate pre-season neurocognitive baseline testing as part of its comprehensive concussion prevention and management program for all of its national series drivers.

At the start of this season, NASCAR recommended that drivers who did not already have a baseline test secure one, while also indicating that a pre-season baseline mandate could become effective as soon as next year.

Baseline testing will be performed through the use of an ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) test, which is a widely-used neurocognitive assessment tool. The result of neurocognitive testing is one factor out of many that doctors use to diagnose and treat concussions. This particular test evaluates an athlete’s verbal and visual memory, processing speed and reaction time.

By performing this test prior to the start of a season of competition, doctors are given a snapshot of an athlete’s brain function while in a healthy state. Doctors can then use that baseline to compare to post-concussion tests to assist them in both evaluating the effects of any injury and informing their decisions to return an athlete to competition.

“NASCAR made this decision because we think it is important to drivers’ health for doctors to have the best information and tools available in evaluating injuries,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR vice president of racing operations. “Before announcing this rule, we provided drivers concussion and baseline testing education and created opportunities for them to ask any questions they may have to a top neurosurgeon that specializes in traumatic brain injuries. Also, remember that ImPACT tests are not new to our sport and have been used for treatment through the years.”

Since NASCAR’s recommendation prior to the start of this season, drivers were invited to two concussion education sessions featuring Dr. Vinay Deshmukh, M.D. of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, a member of NASCAR’s Medical Advisory Group of Consulting Physicians. At those sessions, drivers were presented with an overview of what concussions are, their causes, treatment and the role that baseline tests play in the comprehensive evaluation of concussions.
“We are extremely confident that our concussion protocol is among the best in sports,” O’Donnell said. “We regularly review all of our practices involving safety and health to see if there is anything that we can do better, or should do differently moving forward. Implementing baseline testing is a primary example of our philosophy to protect our competitors the best that we can.”

It's about time.

Towards the end of the Nascar season the results of these tests could get interesting. Betting on a lot of top drivers missing races over this. Not saying its a bad thing because concussions are happening nearly every day in all types of sports. Nascars drivers deserve the same care that the football guys are getting

Keselowski may have some trouble with this. ;)

This is a good thing for concussions and fumes.

I support it.

Last thursday, one of our team members (19 yo female) crashed her dragster. The ambulance crew said she was fine (she was only complaining of knee pain), and he helmet wasn't too banged up. But the roll cage was banged up real bad. NHRA required her to go to the hospital, so her mom took here while about 8 of us plus her dad and grandpa helped load what was left of the car into their trailer.

We found out the next day that the hospital deemed her with a not-quite-minor concussion, and barred her from driving anything, even the golf cart, for twenty days.

If the NHRA had not been there, they would have just put the car away and gone to bed.

This will probably drive some innovation. It'll be good for all forms of racing even if other series don't adopt the same policy.

Wonder about some of the older guys who have taken more hits on the concrete walls over time than the SAFER walls.

What will happen next year when JJ, who is leading in the chase, is involved in the "big one" and he has to sit out a race or two?

The wise drivers will just make sure they slow down for the first test. Some like Brad K can just act normal.
Everyone will be pissed when drivers start missing races
Some major changes are going to happen soon

I see a big fine coming for Brad K, Nascar aint gonna put up with him butchering their new program

Brad tweets 20 times about how it's a bad thing and then says he's gonna wait before forming an opinion. Um, ya already told us your opinion jerkwad.

What a goofball, and he is the champ. Shame on the other drivers for letting that happen. It really doesnt make them look to worthy
Thank goodness his reign is over or almost anyway

I see his point, having doctors decide if he can race or not. That should be a decision made by the driver IMO, in conjunction with the drivers report from the Doc.

With the with current and formey players and their families are going after the NFL for CTE now, this is in NASCAR's best interests. Brad should STFU.

If the doctor says the driver is not ok to drive, nascar makes the decision and parks the driver.

Doc's make mistakes, I'm living proof of that. Sidelining a driver who is in the chase with the chance of winning the championship will have the conspiracy theorist coming out of the woodwork!

Devil's advocate, is this testing really in nascar's best interest or a cya tactic?

Brad proves that being famous, rich and successful doesn't necessarily mean that you're smart.

Just read that.

Does this guy even know what he's saying half the time he opens his trap?

This is so asinine that it makes you wonder if Brad is not just trolling or is in fact as retarded as he looks.

He just says stuff to get attention.
