Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Manny Ramirez is retiring.

Major League Baseball announced the move in a statement on Friday.

"Major League Baseball recently notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the statement said. "Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed MLB that he is retiring as an active player. If Ramirez seeks reinstatement in the future, the process under the Drug Program will be completed. MLB will not have any further comment on this matter."

It sounds like retiring was a pretty good idea under those circumstances.

yep. manny is/was a good player but i won't miss him. don't think many others will either.

He's always been kind of a jerk. He started out being just weird and shy when he was a kid with the Indians. Then he just got more self-centered as he neared free agency. I remember when he was asked what it meant to him that the fans gave him a standing ovation in his last game in Cleveland. He said "I don't know, I don't got no idea". Then he ended up becoming a complete tool in Boston when he ended up assaulting a guy who worked for the team.

All that being said though, I always loved to watch him hit. He had incredible balance and power. He was simply one of the best hitters I've ever seen.

He was fun to watch sometimes , but he became a majot PITA after a while when he was with Boston.
