Wouldn't use the term retiring, but plans to never race again past this season, which is retiring.

[...] While he wouldn't use the "retirement" word Friday while talking with reporters – he says the word has burned him in the past – Martin strongly hinted he would not race in 2014 and beyond.

Martin said he made the decision not to race in January and has kept it between his friends and family. When he finished third in February's Daytona 500, he said he was pleased knowing it would be his last one.

"It's time for me to open a new chapter," Martin said during a 24-minute interview Friday at Phoenix International Raceway.

Martin will do testing next season for Stewart-Haas Racing, where he currently drives. He will test Tony Stewart's No. 14 car in January at Daytona, then attend most or all of SHR's tests in 2014 to provide feedback or a second opinion.[...]

Get to the booth.

God knows Rusty needs to be replaced.

I like Alan Bestwick and Rusty. :)

Senca Wallace is the Green Bay Packers starting quarterback for the next three weeks, I've trying to come up with a joke about Rusty Wallace joining the Packers.

You could say that Senca is too Rusty to be quarterback :)

Good luck to Mark in his future endeavors. One of my favorite drivers of all time. He was a classy, clean racer, always treated his team and competitors with respect. A true role model for the youngsters. He will certainly be missed, I only wish he could have gotten that elusive championship. It would have been cool to have seen him drive for a team like RCR or JGR after he left Roush

How many times a broadcast does ole Crusty say "this guy can flat fly"

:lol2:

Him, Andy Petree and Marty Reid. The 3 stooges that couldn't. :D

Those 3 were so god awful when they were actually calling the races back in 07 I think. Good lord.

Yeah I'll take Bestwick and Jarrett over those 3 clowns any day, especially Marty Reid he was terribad

Well, good luck to Mark Martin, sorry to see that he never won a Championship, but he definitely deserves a spot in NASCAR HoF

Who says nobody remembers the guy who finishes second?
I don't know about that. How many people remember Ernie Irvan and Geoff Bodine? Martin is a class act and good guy but he may be lumped in with all the great drivers who never won a Cup.

I was hoping MM would mentor young drivers in the NW and truck series by running just enough races to get a full season sponsor for their ride. IMO, he could win in those series for years to come.

That is exactly what I meant. He's the Dan Marino of NASCAR

I posted this earlier in another thread but, all things considered, I think it's worth repeating.

Several notable, now retired, drivers that Mark Martin has competed against in a NASCAR Cup race:

Rusty Wallace
Terry Labonte
Dale Jarrett
Ricky Rudd
Bill Elliott
Dale Earnhardt
Darrell Waltrip
Harry Gant
Davey Allison
Alan Kulwicki
Tim Richmond
Buddy Baker
A.J. Foyt
Johnny Rutherford
Benny Parsons
Cale Yarborough
Richard Petty
Bobby Allison
David Pearson

not too shabby, me thinks . . .

Good luck MM. Sorry I missed your top years in nascar.

Lets not worry about how nascar will do when he leaves. Brian planned ahead and he's already been replaced by the best woman driver who will never win a championship.

MM may be making a mistake. The HoF can't consider him for induction until after he retires.

Personally I think Mark is still a few years down the road from being considered, too many more deserving than him, IMO.

In not just the Top Three Series either, I'm sure there are other drivers in the K&N, Modifieds, etc. etc. that deserves to be in the HoF.

I can't remember, somebody will look it up.
Three years.

I think he'll be a first-ballot HoF inductee. The only drivers ahead of him on the Cup win list that haven't been inducted yet are all active (Gordon, JJ, Stewart) or retired and not yet eligible (Bill Elliott). He's also 6th on the Kyle Busch win list (Cup + Busch + Truck).

I think he's a lock for sure, I just don't know when.

$20 says he races next year, I'm so sick of hearing this from the guy, he lost all credibility with me when he did that retirement tour the first time, selling all that merchandise, then comes back and races the next year!

Mark Martin never said he was retiring. Jack Roush threw that word out even though Mark wasn't ready to retire.

Lolz...

I thought it was corny how he raced all the throwback Valvoline/Folgers/etc paint schemes with Viagra sponsorship.
