Mark Martin staying at SHR as driver coach for Danica Patrick

So if I read this right a driver in the top racing series in the U.S. needs a go between to help explain to her crew cheif what the car is doing and what adjustments it needs? Are you F#@#$NG kidding me!! Wow I have no response I'm speechless.

If you are good enough to race at the cup level you dont need a coach. Oh wait, Danica is there because of sponsorship and not ability. Cant hurt to have some help I suppose. ;)

Oh and of course the article says nothing about driver coach.. although I don't know how telling Mark what's wrong with the car will help any if anything, it makes the right adjustments happen slower..

I'm confused after reading the article.

Aside from the actual part of racing, she obviously can't figure out the car, because she shouldn't have an average qualifying position greater than 30 with at car.

I don't remember whether it was an NNS race last year or a cup race, but I can remember a time when her car overheated on the track. They captured the audio on TV and you could hear her crew chief explaining to her that a cold temp gauge after you've been running hard means that the car is out of coolant! Hard to believe that any driver who makes it to NNS or Cup series doesn't know what a cold temp gauge means while running hard...any driver except her that is.

Mark is going to have his work cut out for him.

not to mention how much it costs to melt down a Hendrick lease engine. I swear they are running crate motors in her car..she doesn't know the difference and they are saving 40 thou a week.

Finally....I hope anyway...Martin is hanging it up....after how many failed retirements.....of course I'll believe it when I see it!

Perfect roll for Mark.. IMO, He should have retired once he stepped outta the #6 Viagra car.. this will be a good way for him to fade away gradually instead of another embarrassing retirement tour

I don't think Mark's racing days are over, nor should they. He is still one of the better drivers in Cup despite his age. Don't be surprised if he wins a race or two in the 14 before the season is over.

This will be good for Danica as I've said before. He can get in her car and help her get the setup right. Tony and Ryan couldn't exactly fit in her seat and take laps during practice.

It was only 2009 that Martin made a serious run at the Cup but Johnson was just to good that year - among others.

Great , so now in addition to the Danica bashing thread , we need a Mark Martin bashing thread ? You kids are unbelievable.
Mods might as well move this thread to the Danica haters forum.

Seriously? holy crap, she really is lost.

Mark Martin: I respect the guy for his contributions to Nascar over the years, I respect his work out ethic, and He is without a doubt a great driver. However, the way he went about retiring and un retiring just left a bad taste in my mouth and I lost a lot of respect for the guy.

"The idea is Martin could help explain to Gibson how Patrick’s car is reacting so he can make the proper adjustments to help it go faster."

Oh, I get it. Mark will be Gibson's coach, because he doesn't know how to make "it" go faster.

Geez, being Danica's CC sure is a dead end job.

Or she seriously wants to get better .I don't see the problem . Travis Pastrana is trying the same stuff . So are the Dillon boys .Probably most of the drivers have had help from driving schools and coaches at one time or another . Are you sure this isn't just about hating Danica?:booya:

Travis is trying to drive around with no coolant because the temps are low?????????

Holy Peanut butter and Jelly fish sandwich, Batman!

Stop thinking with your wood, Stumpy. The girl has a long way to go before she is cup ready. If everyone keeps telling her it's because Gibson needs Mark Martins help making proper adjustments, she'll never get there.

I think SHR has brought in everybody but the Dalai Lama to try to help Danica run well. Other than being able to look her in the eye, I'm not sure what Mark can tell her that she shouldn't already know. Maybe they can put one of those drivers ed steering wheels on the right side of the car, and he can ride along with her.

I just read the article on Jayski and it was mentioning the testing aspect of it. Tony hates testing and apparently won't be back in the car before Daytona. So if SHR can get a driver of Mark's caliber to be a full time tester, then it should help their program a lot. Being a coach to Danica is just something else he can help with, but I get the feeling his main responsibility will be to find speed in all the SHR cars. I remember at the beginning of this year hearing that SHR wanted to setup a full time test team and they were talking about hiring Scott Riggs. Well no offense to Riggs but I don't think he would be able to provide the level of insight and find the speed that a Mark Martin could. Good move by SHR IMO.

I read that too, and I think it's a huge mistake to build cars off what MM says when guys like Kurt, Tony and Kevin are the drivers. Their driving style has little in common with those 3, especially Kurt and Tony.

Martin is going to be testing for Tony. Not Kurt and Kevin. Since Tony can't be in the car, due to the injury, why would it not make sense to have someone else test it?

While I agree with you that they don't have the same driving style at all, I still think it'll be beneficial to have a guy like Mark in the SHR fold. He's not necessarily going to be able to provide setups for Tony or whoever, but he can help give feedback on the car as a whole. So say they have a couple different rear ends they want to try or a couple different shock packages, he'll be able to tell them which gives the most speed. Maybe the setup won't be to the liking of Tony and co. but I still think he can help find speed and provide insight as to what the car is doing on track.

IDK. I read that organizations build their FRAMES based on driver feedback during testing.

This is nothing new. Other drivers have jumped in the seat for testing for as long as I can remember.
