Mark Martin's been so close, can he close the deal?

Mark Martin goes into this weekend's New Hampshire 300 trailing leader Sterling Marlin by only nine points in the NASCAR Winston Cup standings. Below are some tidbits regarding Martin's previous championship battles.

* The last time Mark Martin led the point standings was following the DieHard 500 at Talladega on April 16, 2000 -- after the ninth race of the season. Martin posted a sixth-place run that afternoon and grabbed the lead by 24 points from Bobby Labonte, who finished 21st. Labonte regained the points lead the following week at California and held it the rest of the season to win his first NASCAR Winston Cup championship.

* The last time Martin was this close entering the final 10 races of the season was in 1998 when he trailed Jeff Gordon by 67 points with 10 races remaining. Gordon went on to earn the championship by 364 points after winning four of the final 10 events. Martin won twice during that decisive stretch and had seven top-five finishes overall.

* The last time Martin led the point standings with 10 races or less left was in 1997 when he held a 13-point lead over Gordon with 10 events remaining. In what ended up being the closest three-way battle in NASCAR Winston Cup history, Gordon prevailed by 14 points over second-place Dale Jarrett and 15 points over third-place Martin.

* The latest Martin has ever held the top spot in a points race was in 1990 when he led Dale Earnhardt by 45 points with only two events remaining. Earnhardt went on to win at Phoenix and take a six-point lead into the final race in Atlanta, where he finished third. Martin's sixth-place effort that day meant a runner-up spot in the standings by 26 points.

This could be the year sheds his "best to never be champ" crown and dons a well deserved WC crown. Mark has never won at NHIS but he carries the 4th best average finish of all active drivers. The Winston Cup circuit has run 11 times at New Hampshire and Mark has been in them all, finishing outside the top ten only 3 times.

Well MM has sure earned it if he wins it. He has been a quality driver forever and has come close many times. I for one would not be disappointed if he takes the cup this year, and in fact would love to see him take it over most of the drivers eligible.

:) :) :) :)

I don't think he will. He's "too nice" on the track. I can't remember seeing him really race anyone. He always moves over, no matter how late in the race it is, and lets them by. I'm not saying that he should wreck, bang into, or smash them in anyway, but at least try a little!

Yikes! What is "not trying" after how many years this man has been vying for the Cup??? Just because he doesn't wreck others for sport doesn't qualify him for being soft. Poll the racers and 99% of them will tell you he's the cleanest driver out there. Nothing wrong with that. He'll get it this year if not next....

I never said he should wreck the other drivers, but how many times have you seen Jarrett, Stewart, Gordon, Jr, Labonte, or anyone else just move over? I don't have a problem with Martin at all, he's very classy, (I don't really care for Jack Rousch, but I like Martin). and I hope he does win a cup one day.

Just as soon as he leaves Rousch. :D

Shiloh, I totally respect your opinion, and even agree, but what I meant by wrecking other drivers is what do you mean by being "too nice"? He's been up there beatin' and bangin' with the rest of them, he just knows when to back off and salvage a good finish, IMO.....

You're very true, but maybe every so often if he pulled a "Rusty" or a "Gordon", he might get the 5-10 points he needs! ;)

Of course Mark can. He's the best dern driver in nascar without question. Has been for years. Nice to be seeing it all come together for him.

Now whether he does or not can be summed up in two little words.....that's racin.

I would like to see him win it. Him giving Jarrett that little shove into the wall proves he was racing for points and that he hungers for the championship. Its going to be a tight race.

I think it is gonna end up being Jack Roush that decides whether this is the Championship year for Mark. A good share of the races left will be determined by the best handling car, not the driver that handles what they got the best. New Hampshire, Dover, Dega and Miami Homestead have all been conquered most often by the best equipment not the best drivers. I often wish that were not the case but such is life!

Mark will win his second cup this year, and maybe this time NASCAR will actually let him keep it.

I heard that driver.:) What's up TW?I hope he just don't pit before the last laps run at Homestead. :D

Not much going on here pb. Went out a little earlier to check on/harass my new pervert I have to supervise. I just love waking them up at 11:00! Otherwise, just tying up some loose ends around the office, wondering if you need a silent partner in that business of yours to help you spend all them profits. :D

Lord knows I got a loud partner at home TnWard,Maybe a silent one wouldn't be a bad idea.:p Back in an hour. :)

I think if lady luck rides with him Mark with get the cup this year. I can't think of a driver out there I'd like to see win it more. Hang tuff ol' dude!!!

I smell a cup coming on for someone in the top 5. The fact is that all of them are in easy striking range. Yep Mark deserves to win one after all these years, but if he doesnt, then so be it.

Mark will get the Cup because he earns it,Not because he deserves it.I don't want to hear he got lucky,or if this,or that didn't happen. If he doesn't it will not be the end of the world.I for one would think no less of him.And that's the beauty of being a fan of your favorite driver in Nascar.;)

If Jack and Mark get along a well as Mark says, then it should be a no brainer. Give Mark the best equipment possible, and stay out of theway. Let Mark, Sterling, Jeff, Jimmy and Tony race. May the best man win. If you have to use the chrome horn to make your point, well... as they say "rubbin is racin" (Go Jeff!!) :D
