Mark Martin's comment

hey, what was the deal about Mark Martin wanting to make other drivers "aware of his situation"? what, does he think he gets special treatment or something? I didn't even see a partial teammate to McMurray getting special treatment, so why the hell should he? Kind of made me lose respect for him.

Yea, I heard that too during the race. Kahne should have told that to Jr's team. Oh and by the way just so everybody knows I'm going to the toilet now. I just want you to be aware of my situation. :XXROFL:

A) This is not at all unusual. Mark was racing for something far more significant than the difference between 34th and 35th in the race. Almost every driver in the top 25 will make such comments at some point in the season when a part timer is near them sliding all over the place. Unbunch the undies; it happens every race.

B ) Mark is and has always been the type driver who, when laps down, gets out of the way and allows those racing for something that matters to do so without having to dodge him. Unlike some on the circuit. Mark simply expects the same courtesy in return. It's been his undoing before too.

C) At least it wasn't as bad as Jimmie Johmson's whining about wanting someone he was racing for position to move over and let him by, as has happened on numerous occasions.

Dislike Mark Martin if you choose, but if you wish to save yourself some egg on the face find something better than this. Mark is a consumate professional, a gentleman, and one of the most respected drivers in the garage area. He is also perceived as a whiner from time to time; sometimes I agree, sometimes not depending on the circumstances. In this instance, I don't agree. Feel free to form your own opinion.

I missed the comment can someone paraphrase for me please?

Mark was running top ten or so, and he was surrounded by part time drivers who were on worn out tires and in way over their heads. He almost got hit a few times, and he went on his radio to the crew and frantically asked someone to have a word with the crews of these drivers. His words were something to the effect of, "Can somebody go down there and let these guys know our circumstances here?"

my own opinions aside, Scott Riggs is not a part time driver

further, being nice never won anyone any championships, dudes outside the top ten like Kahne didn't catch any breaks from anyone, especially those who were already locked in, moreso, McMurray couldn't even catch a break from his own teammate, so why should Mark Martin, the consummate professional, expect breaks from others? I never saw him allow any of those part time in over their head drivers a chance to get their lap back?

He never led the race, so how could he let them get laps back?

Scott Riggs, while not a part time driver, is a rookie. Sue me.

My point still stands. Just because some guys choose to become moving obstacles for lead lap drivers when they are five laps down (not mentioning any names 31 or anything) doesn't make it the way to be. If respecting someone for being a gentleman is off base, tag me out.

its not an issue of respect for someone because they are a gentleman, its the issue that, if we all "understood situations" for everyone, then we might as well let the guy with the best manners have the trophy at the beginning of the season...this may apply for someone winning a "mr nice guy" trophy, but not a NASCAR NEXEL CUP SERIES Trophy

I have to admit that Mark Martin is among the cleanest and most gentlemanly drivers in the series. He's been that way for as long as I can remember. That's a plus for his fans (of which, I'm only a casual fan of his).........it does nothing for a Championship title. Somewhere along the line many have decided that just because he's a gentleman and he can drive a race car as well as most anyone, he "deserves" a Championship! He only deserves that title when he wins that title. And very few "gentlemen" have won a Cup title. DJ, Terry Labonte and Bobby Labonte are about the only three I can think of who have done that. Among those three we are talking about 4 Championships........not a very high percentage. :) NASCAR top tier racing is not a "gentleman's sport". Never was and with the level of competition coming in, it never will be. I would be surprised to even see one more "gentleman" ever win a Cup again..........including Mark Martin.

Some believe he did win one and it got stolen...but that's a different dead horse to beat.

Didn't ANYBODY watch Dave Despain's live interview
with Mark on Wind Tunnel about a week ot two ago?????
Mark IS a gentleman's driver. He said, he would NOT resort to rough driving, that that was just not the way he wants things to be. He said if he had to wreck someone to win a race, he would rather not win. He wants to win on his own skill and ability. I admire Mark. Just because he is NOT aggressive doesn't make him a bad driver. I understand that there ARE lots of aggressive drivers out there, but they really should respect Mark. I surely hope all of the young drivers don't feel the same as Kurt Busch said when he called the older drivers, old men that should not be out there. (not a direct quote. But close enuff.)
Oh, well, even them young guys will be ole guys some day. LOL

Dragonlady, that is exactly why I said I would be surprised (and that would not be and unpleasant surprise for me, either) if Mark won a Championship. This is not the same NASCAR he raced in during the early 80's........much more is at stake now than then!! Might be somewhat sad, but it don't change the facts. "Nice guys seldom finish first"! Been that way since competition was invented.
