DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Mark Martin, who came within a half-car-length of winning the 2007 Daytona 500, announced a 26-race Sprint Cup schedule Monday, including a Daytona 500 rematch, 23 other point races and two special events.

Martin will kick off his 2008 season and debut in the No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevrolet with his record-extending 20th consecutive Budweiser Shootout. Following the 50th Daytona 500, Martin will run the next three events, at Las Vegas, California and Atlanta, before giving way to youngster Aric Almirola, who will run at Bristol and the 11 remaining Sprint Cup point events.

"I think it's going to be an exciting season," said Martin, who will enter his 26th year of Cup racing. "I'm so excited to be behind the wheel of the No. 8 U.S. Army Chevrolet and to be working with Tony Gibson [crew chief] and the No. 8 team.

Mark, it's time to hang up the helmet. You wanted to two years ago, but was talked into hanging on for a year. That brought a change of car model and with the Chevy, you think that you can change the world. I only hope that you don't do a DW and, well, we all know what that means.

I still don't have much respect for his that he said he was going to quit, but came back and stayed for a few years.

I am glad to see he (should) finish his carrear out in a Chevy! :beerbang: :p

Again, I guess none of you have ever changed your minds ?? Maybe he wants to race again, is there anything wrong with that? Considering he was leading the points until he sat down last year, I don't think there is any DW in him. Also, "change the world" ?? Where did you come up with that gem ?? Have you spoken with Mark about his reasoning to race this year, Buck ??

You are correct. There is a clear distinction between Mark and DW. DW only had 8 top 10 finishes in his last 5 years of racing (151 races). Mark on the other hand is very competitive with 26 top 10 finishes in his last 60 races. Mark is still a threat to win most races which cannot be said of all the other drivers. As long as he still has the will to race and is competitive, then let him race.

Isn't that more races than he drove last year? Just curious.

I dont get into the manufactureres War. Big deal.

With that said.....Its great to have Mark Martin racing.

To suggest that last years Daytona runner up should have hung up the helmet 2 years ago is pretty juvenille.

What will you say when he pilots the number 8 car out of turn four in the lead on the last lap, like he did last year?:idunno:

<insert sound of crickets>

Yep, ol mark is washed up......lol:rolleyes:

Not bad for a newbie to the forum. Stick around, wisdom is hard to find sometimes. :)

I sure wouldn't mind seeing him cross the finish line first this year at Daytona. As a matter of fact, I'd be super happy! That is, of course, unless Jeff wants to win. I don't think I'd be too upset about that either. heh heh :D In all seriousness, I think Mark is a great racer and a great guy.

I've got a picture of Mark from back in '81, at N Wilksboro, in of all things a *gasp* pony-ack.....lol. I've followed him since the late 70's, through bankruptcy, glory days of Roush, brief stints with ( oh I HATE sayin this...... Hendrick...) so, I'll stand by him now..... and as far as I'm concerned, its better to see a bow tie on that car than Viagra..... (boy were those hard years, no pun intended..)
So with that said...... Go Mark, get back to back Daytona 500 wins...... ( lol... yeah, I know, NASCAR says Harvick won, but hey, we all know what the RULES were BEFORE that race........)
