Martin could drive Ford in limited truck schedule
Veteran says he has opportunity to race Chevys in Busch Series

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Mark Martin's days with Ford are not over yet.

Martin said on Thursday that his 2007 race schedule will likely include 5-10 races in a Ford in the Craftsman Truck Series. He also said that he is likely to run a 5-10-race Busch Series schedule in a Chevrolet.

At Talladega this month, Martin announced that he would drive a 20-race Nextel Cup schedule in the No. 01 Chevrolet for MB2 Motorsports next season.

Martin said that his Busch plans will involve an unnamed Chevrolet team, possibly one different than MB2.

"I am pretty close to a truck deal," said Martin, who has run 11 truck races this year, winning five of them. "I think the first hurdle has finally been cleared on that.

"I think I will race a Ford truck next year, and five, maybe even 10 races and I think I will race a Busch car five to 10 races in a very exciting variety, possibly three different teams. The Busch team will be a Chevrolet, and the truck will be a Ford, if I race it."

The move to MB2 Motorsports shocked the industry. There is arguably no driver more associated with a team than Mark Martin and Roush Racing -- the two have been together for 19 years -- but Martin did not want to run a full schedule in 2007.

MB2 Motorsports has struggled mightily this season -- the two-car team has scored just two top-10s all season -- but Martin says the team will surprise some people in 2007.

"Things were getting better before I signed on," Martin said. "In the past they have been a great team and a great contender. They started turning the corner."

22 Cup races
5-10 Busch
5-10 Truck

 That will allow him to spend a lot more time with the family. ??

It'll allow him to spend more money on his family.
Remember, Mark is looking at the big picture. Matt is going to race and that is going to cost money.

He's not doing it for the money. He wants to race. That's all. Nothing wrong with that.

He still has his successful Ford dealership, doesn't he?

I think he's doing it for both. He certainly has said in the past that the cup schedule was too much of a grind and he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Frankly, I don't have a clue what Mark will do next. His actions and words seem to disconnected <g>

I imagine the busch & truck races he'll participate in will coincide with the cup races he's driving, therefore...only 20 weeks of racing opposed to 36. Sounds like many small time owners are requesting his knowledge/expertise to help out their up & coming teams & drivers. He also may be checking out all avenues for the future of his sons racing carreer.

Most Busch races and CTS races are either Saturdays or even Fridays. If he gets finished by late afternoon on a Saturday, he can jump on a plane go to where Matt is racing that night.

I don't know about that guy. Yesterday he said on Speed that for the last 19 years he has done what others wanted, and next year he'll do what he wants. Does that make sense? Not to me. Just talk. He did exactly what he wanted to do all along.

I know I decide were I'm going to work so I don't see how it should be any different for him.

Good luck to 'em in whatever he decides to do!

How the heck do you know he did what he wanted to ?? Didn't know you were a mind reader ??

No, but I've listened to him every year talking about how he loved racing the #6. Over and over. Surely he was not telling lies, was he?

Mark IS HAVING FUN! He has a pretty full schedule for next year between Truck (CTS) and on Nascar Live he said that he realized that cutting back on his Cup rides hurt his heart.
He's a big boy and is looking forward to next year, and Matt's future in Nascar. Maybe then he'll relax a bit.

Looks like Martin to run for Wood Brothers in Truck Series: #6-Mark Martin still doesn't know what his limited Craftsman Truck Series schedule will look like next year, but he said Friday that Wood Brothers/JTG Racing is working to secure the sponsorship. "We're waiting on the Woods to come up with a sponsor," Martin said. "... I can't give you answers [yet], but I don't expect things not to work out. They're looking to secure the sponsorship and we're looking at Daytona to be the first one." The team currently runs two full-time truck teams with #21-Bobby East and #20-Marcos Ambrose. It has committed to run a truck for Stacy Compton next year, with the driver or drivers for the other truck still being determined. It is expected that rookie Kelly Bires will compete at least part-time in the second truck.(SceneDaily.com)(11-4-2006)
