#6-Mark Martin's racing future remains unresolved, but he is eliminating one possible option for 2007 - he won't own a Nextel Cup race team. Martin said Friday that he shot down that idea floated by Jack Roush, his current team owner who will soon be restricted to four race cars. "Jack would like me to own two teams - own one and drive one," Martin said in the Watkins Glen International garage area. "I just don't have that much left in me," he continued. "I'm a fighter, and I've got a lot of fire and desire. If I wanted to, I could do that." But Martin, who has yet to sign a Craftsman Truck Series contract with Ford for next season, doesn't want the responsibility and hassle that comes with team ownership. "I would be miserable," Martin said. "I would work right down to my knees. That's not what I want for my future. I want some time. I want some friends. I want to be there for family and friends. I want to do some other things and still race. I can do that with the truck series, and we'll see what works out from there." Martin's ideal racing schedule would be a full-time Craftsman Truck Series ride complimented by up to a dozen Nextel Cup races. He can't do that with Roush. Martin said Busch Series driver Todd Kluever will drive the #6 entry full-time next season. Martin left the door open for any number of scenarios in 2007, including a full-time Cup ride. "I'm not going to say I won't do a full schedule, because it could happen, but I don't see it," Martin said. Martin said the rumor about racing a Cup car with Robert Yates Racing has no merit. The two men made a joke about a union after hearing about the speculation. "It was just a joke," Martin said of his conversation with Yates. "I said, 'How much am I supposed to give you [to drive your car]?"(SceneDaily.com)(8-12-2006)

I'm sure a lot of you are wondering why Mark wouldn't field a couple of teams, especially now that he has ALL of that money he scammed with with the bogus Salute trick

You really can't beleive much of what these drives say now a day. One week they say they are happy with their ride and are staying put, the next week they sign on with another team. Even Mark Martin pulled this last year with him retiring. He said for most of the year the he would not be back full-time next year and yet he is still driving the 6 car.

I do see Mark Martin having a three car team next year. He will bring over his 17 team which will help out Roush's car cap problem and take over ownership of the 38 / 88 Robert Yates Racing team. I also see him back one more year in Roush's 6 car.

Maybe, but I don't see it. I believe Mark will go the truck series and enjoy bringing Matt's career along. Money isn't everything.

Don't think for a moment that Martin wouldn't like to continue the family name in the #6 car. Bringing his son along in his career is probably one of the prime objectives right now and if Mark can hang on long enough and be competitive long enough for Matt to make it to Cup , so be it. I'd like to see him just get out of the 6, go to CTS like he said he was going to do, and shut up, but hey that is just me! Obviously money is everything these days in the upper echelons of Nascar racing or we wouldn't have all this BS to talk about. ;)

O.K. y'all can quit squeeking for now...

UPDATE: on Speed Channel's NASCAR Raceday, Mark Martin was asked about his 2007 plans, Martin said it is highly unlikely that he will be back full-time in Cup next season and WILL drive the full 2007 Craftsman Truck Series schedule AND is working on a deal for run 12 companion Cup races, but is looking for a car and sponsor. Martin said the truck team is fully sponsored.(Speed Channel's NASCAR Raceday)(8-13-2006)

You're absolutely right, Mopar. Money does talk. Just like when Kahne did a 180 & screwed the maker(FORD) that got him where he is today, for the $$$.

Yep he had a better opportunity, nothing wrong with that.

I'm not flip flopping, that was a totally different situation than Martins'. Business deals are made every day in Nascar, Kasey went with Evernham and Dodge because it was better off for his career, simple as that. Seems i remember that all this was settled with Ford about a year ago. I also remember when Jeffy was coming up that Hendrick snatched him away from another owner (name i can't remember), no one is bitching about that. Mark Martin is a nice guy and all, good driver, good family man, but when you announce you are going to retire and have a farewell tour.... retire! Martin then turns around and says maybe he might be back again in the middle of this season after stating at the begining of 06 that this would be his last in CUP. If he really had some morals he would of stepped down after last season, let the fans SALUTE him like they did all of 05 and then went to CTS. So how am i flip flopping, explain this mystery to me.

Mark seemed very sincere about his 2007 plans and I wish him well.

...so...if you have morals you're not allowed to change your mind

Now y'all just stoppit...
I have just returned from a trip with Marty McFly and I'll have you know in 2012 Martin's farewell tour is going as strong as ever. His '06 and '07 souvenirs are selling for astronomical prices on GoogleBay... ;)

The name you can't remember is Bill Davis. Jeff drove for Bill Davis in the Busch Series and was nearing the END of his contract with Bill Davis. He was courted by Rick Hendrick and made the decision to sign with Rick Hendrick for the NEXT season to run Cup car. And, yes there was some bitching going on in several threads on this very forum. Then again, that happened in '92/'93, too.

Maj, Davis was expecting Jeffy to move to Cup with him and Ford. I was cooresponding with a fellow postal worker who, along with her husband, are great friends of Bill and Gail Davis. I got a lot of inside info, but one thing that was for sure was that not only was Davis miffed and surprised by the jump, so was Ford. But as you say, that was an eon ago and no one remembers that sort of thing. Hell, even the beloved Dale Earnhardt Sr. drove a Ford at one time.

All of this is nothing new in this sport. The word loyalty isn't in the dictionary these days when it comes to any sports. It's all about the money.

I never said that. Changing your mind and planning out a farewell tour with special souveniors are totally two different things. I'm dropping this after this post. Martin is playing into the hands of Jack , either that or he just can't let go of the fact that he hasn't won a Championship yet, and can't bare to retire until he does. Either way when you go out of your way to have a tour to CELEBRATE the fact that you are retiring, RETIRE, don't change your mind and leave everyone looking like idiots.
