This is the first time my loyalty to a driver has come into question. LOL :D

Sources: Martin to stand in if baby calls away Gordon
If Jeff Gordon is forced to miss a race to attend the birth of his daughter, series veteran Mark Martin will man the No. 24 Chevrolet, multiple sources within the Hendrick Motorsports organization told ESPN.com Wednesday.

Martin on Wednesday afternoon will be fitted for a racing seat in preparation for the substitute role, sources said, and plans to begin stand-by duty for Gordon at Infineon Raceway next month.

Hendrick Motorsports officials chose not to comment, saying rather that Gordon would address the matter Thursday at Lowe's Motor Speedway, site of this weekend's Coca-Cola 600.

Choosing Mark Martin to wheel his car in case of his absence ???

Smart Man.

He could miss a race and still be leading the points. Good move to get a good driver to get the owner points. Would be something to see Mark win in the 24. :D

I guess I will have to disagree!

That 160 or whatever points might mean the difference in getting into the chase and not! There is little for the husband to do at a birthing cept simply sit around and wait.. The kid is coming no matter where the dad is.
A few hours one way or the other won't matter in the long haul. For sure she will have everyone else in the family getting in the way.. I say RACE Jeffy RACE.
Betsy

There are some circles that think maybe Mark already stood in for Jeff when it comes to this baby...if you catch my drift... :)

With the medical technology now, unless something unexpected comes up, they will schedule the birth and induce labor.:)

Betsy .... It's a sad, sad world you live in, and you have my pity.

I listened to an interesting debate about this last week and those in the debate agreed that with today's technology, this situation probably won't come about, unless there are problems. Now there are old timers who probably feel the way old timer Betsy feels and that's fine for them, but I don't think that Jeffy is on the same page. We aren't in the same age as those oldster are that are dieing off and these kids now days have a more closer relationship with their spouses. I don't need to give Jeffy credit for this decision because I feel it's only normal today. There are plenty of guys out there who give their jobs more priority than there family and to that end, many, if not most, are not married now or at least, not to the same person. A job is a job, but a family is family. Jeffy doesn't have to worry about the money situation like maybe some newbie in the sport, and I believe he understands that. Yes, racing is his passion and his life, but sometimes, there are more important things in life than a trophy. Jeffy already has many of those and all it would do is add one more.

I wonder...there is a care center at the tracks. And, with today's technology they would know about most problems beforehand. He has the money. So take an obstetrician and a few nurses to the track.
And then just hope Kyles doesn't wreck, like he usually does. I'd hate for him to get "Rowdy".

He can take the obstretrician and nurses to the track with him if he wants but the wife has already started staying home. Mother's Day was her last race till after the baby.:beerbang:
