Mark Martin could end up in No. 8 at DEI
By Greg Engle, Editor Cup Scene Daily

Regan Smith will be behind the wheel of No. 01 Chevy now owned by Dale Earnhardt Incorporated this weekend at Watkins Glen in place of Aric Almirola who had been scheduled to make his debut in the car.

Smith, a rookie has raced the car five times this year sharing seat time with veteran Mark Martin.

When Ginn Racing and DEI merged several weeks ago, Smith’s status was left in limbo and Aric Almirola, another rookie who had been recently acquired from Joe Gibbs Racing, was announced as the co-driver with Martin in the No. 01 for the rest of 2007 and all of 2008.

Some are speculating that Smith was given the opportunity to race this weekend because he has more road racing experience.

Still others are saying that now that Hendrick driver Kyle Busch has found a home with Joe Gibbs Racing, DEI is seriously considering signing Smith as driver of a fourth team.

Because he has experience with the No. 01 team, one scenario has Smith remaining in the No. 01 full time while Martin and Almirola will split seat time in the No. 8 Chevy being vacated by Dale Earnhardt Junior at the end of 2007.

Menard will lose his job. If he doesn't go score some top 25 finishes, he's done.

His job's not as safe with much better drivers signed to the team now.

That depends on how much longer Daddy's money is still coveted.

not long i heard??

I think Menard is kinda like Erin Crocker. Only has a ride through circumstance and really can't drive too well.
