Mark Martin making announcement tommorrow morning supposedly to race 22 cup races in the 01 MB2 chevrolet. Also, the chevy ride may jeopardize his ride in the #6 F150 for the CTS. This seems like a backwards move to me.

According to Marty Smith you mean;

According to Racing One it's with MB2, but a third car and new #. That would make more sense as the ARMY asked for the #01 as in Army of One. Why would they change #'s?

IMO this looks like someone is making a bigger FU than Dillner did. No matter how you cut it, someone is dead wrong.

Mark Martin is denying it.

According to Jayski:
Martin announcement Friday at Talladega...in the #01 car? UPDATES: hearing that Mark Martin will announced his 2007 plans on Friday morning [Oct 6th] at Talladega....however, hearing part of his 2007 plans include running some 2007 Nextel Cup races in the #01 Chevy with MB2 Motorsports....the sponsor would NOT be the U.S. Army. Supposedly current #01 driver, Joe Nemechek would move to a different car number for MB2 Motorsports.
From Two Weeks Ago: hearing that Regan Smith, currently driving the #35 McDonald's Ford for Team Rensi in the Busch Series, will go to Ginn Motorsports [#01-Joe Nemechek and #14-Sterling Marlin] in 2007 to run a Cup/Busch schedule.(9-19-2006)
UPDATE: nascar.com has something posted on this: Mark Martin will drive the #01 Chevrolet part time for the 2007 Nextel Cup season, multiple sources close to MB2 Motorsports told NASCAR.COM on Thursday. It is believed that Martin will run 22 races for the team. Busch Series driver Regan Smith will drive the remaining 14 Cup races, the sources said.(10-5-2006)

Mark Martin says:
NASCAR.com reported Thursday that Martin was going to drive MB2's No. 01 Chevrolet next season, but Martin denied it. “It is not true,” Martin said when asked by reporters from The Sporting News and NASCAR Scene. Nemechek currently drives MB2’s No. 01.

My source was my wife.Prob got it from Jayski. I'm a ford guy, but a Martin fan first & don't really care what he drives as long as it's competitive. Even DE drove a Ford at one time during his carreer.

Just retire already

I'm sick of him pulling this "I'm retiring, oh wait no I'm not."

He told MSNBC (during a segment between their "Hurricane Track Ivan" coverage) back in 2004 that he was retiring at the end of the 2004 season.

So then he announced he would run his final season in 2005. He wins the All Star Challenge, seemed like a perfect win. Next thing you know he says he won't retire after claiming 2005 IROC at Richmond. OK, I'm glad he's running another season.

Now he's coming back again. I've always been a fan of Mark Martin but I just wish he would make up his mind. Honestly, I'll probably be in tears when he does retire though - I've watched him race and been a fan of his since I was 4. When he does retire, I just want it to mean something to NASCAR.

Then again, a championship before retirement would be nice :D

Hey Andy...he said he was retiring from running FULL TIME due to the long schedule. That is a lot different than full retirement from racing. So...he's not coming back, he never said he was leaving completely.

It's official now:

MB2 Announces Martin/Smith to #01; Nemechek to #13: MB2 Motorsports announced Friday that Mark Martin and rookie Regan Smith will co-drive the team's #01 U.S. Army Chevy during the 2007 Nextel Cup season. Joe Nemechek, the current driver of the Army Chevy, will pilot a third MB2 entry in 2007 that will carry the #13; the sponsorship will be announced at a later date. Sterling Marlin will continue to drive the #14 MB2 Chevrolet. Martin, who will be leaving his longtime ride with Roush Racing after the 2006 season, signed a multiyear contract with MB2. The agreement calls for Martin to drive the #01 Army car in 20 Nextel Cup races in 2007 plus the Bud Shootout (Daytona, Feb. 10) and the Nextel All Star Challenge (Charlotte, May 19). Martin’s first points race will be the Daytona 500, Feb. 18. Smith will drive the Army car in the remaining 16 Cup point races and will also drive an MB2 car in the NASCAR Busch Series. Along with driving in 22 races in 2007, Martin's extended role with MB2 will be a mentor to the 23-year-old Smith and to MB2’s development drivers. "Our goal at MB2 is to reach a new level, and with Mark joining our organization it not only elevates our presence, but his knowledge and credibility will also be a viable asset to all of our race teams," said team owner Bobby Ginn (pronounced GHIN). "While Mark brings a wealth of experience to MB2, we are also thrilled with the acquisition of Regan,” Ginn added. “He’s eager, talented and will be groomed by one of NASCAR's greatest drivers of all time." Martin, who is currently third in the Chase for the Nextel Cup championship points battle, feels his new role with MB2 offers him an excellent opportunity for doing what he enjoys most and that is to compete as a driver and serve as a mentor. "Joining MB2 is a win-win situation for me," said Martin, a native of Batesville, Ark. "I not only get to drive, but I also get to teach and I love doing both. I have had a great 19 years with Roush Racing. It was a difficult decision to move on. But right now I welcome the opportunity to drive the U.S. Army car and represent our brave soldiers who are fighting the global war on terrorism." Smith, who grew up in Cato, N.Y.-- 25 miles west of Syracuse -- has been preparing for this opportunity since he started to drive a go-kart at age 4. "This is an exciting time for me," said Smith. "Driving an Army-sponsored car in Nextel Cup competition with Mark Martin as your coach is an incredible opportunity. I'm going to listen well and take advantage of what has been presented to me. I am ready to give it all I have in both Cup and Busch." Smith has been competing in the Busch Series this season, driving the #35 car for Team Rensi Motorsports. In his new MB2 Busch ride for 2007, Smith is expected to compete full time in the series. "Mark Martin is one of NASCAR's greatest competitors and having him come on board will greatly enhance and accelerate our development," said Jay Frye, MB2's CEO and general manager. "This is definitely a red-letter day in MB2's 10-year history. We have the best of both worlds with Mark and Regan -- a Hall of Famer, who will work closely with a talented and aggressive young driver." Frye also said that Ryan Pemberton will continue as crew chief for the Army car in 2007. It was also announced today that Kraig Kinser and Jesus Hernandez will continue with their MB2 developmental programs in 2007. Kinser’s schedule will include NASCAR Craftsman Truck, Busch and Cup races. Hernandez will continue to run the late model series as well as selected ARCA and Truck races.(MB2 Motorsports PR)(10-6-2006)

I find this move interesting on several levels.

1. What has happened to the relationship between Martin and Roush?

2. If Martin took a ride with MB2, that speaks volumes what people think about RYR.

3. MB2 must have been the only team willing to let Martin race for 22 races since that's the best he could come up with.

4. This will be an increasing trend over the next few years. Schrader is doing the same thing next year with the Wood Brothers.

Roush is in a catch-22.

If he puts a driver in cup who isn't ready, he's damned.

If, after realizing a driver isn't ready, a veteran stays to drive, he AND the driver are damned.

Mark Martin has, IMO, earned the right to damn well drive for whoever he pleases in any of the Nascar series.:beerbang:

 Earned the right? Doesn't everyone? When you're able to get a ride and get paid for it, you take it.

NASCAR should test Martin for drugs.:D He has to be on something. I am by no means a Roush fan but why go to a team that runs mid pack at best.

I read this morning that Mark has been making plans for this for 7 years and that Jack just didn't understand the complexity of what Mark wanted. Mark got calls from other owners, but didn't like what he was offered. He also said that since the #6 car was a championship team, he didn't want to use it for a part time ride, leaving it open for another full time driver. Roush would have offered him that choice had he wanted it.

Mark is a good friend of Frye and that also probably has a lot to do with it.

If Martin should retire and he made the chase, what does it say about those who didn't?

I believe it's been said on here before, but one driver even went so far as to say that anyone who can't make the chase should't be in Nextel Cup. He didn't make the chase this year.

i'm glad mark knows what he's doing (cause it still doesn't make sense to me) <g> MB2 appears to be the big winner.

Quite an article in today's paper by Mulhern on this subject. Seems that Roush and Smith are blaming all of this on NASCAR's new rule of owners only being able to have four teams. Still, the question is why could Chevy make an offer to Martin and Ford couldn't? It says that Mark had talked to Yates, but at that time, Mark was talking about racing only 8 to 10 races and they were wanting a full time driver. They said that this 20 races deal has only come up recently. Also on the plate could be the future plans of Matt Martin, who is 14. Mark is working very hard with his son and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see where Mark is guiding him.

And one thing more on Mark's moving and that is who will be in the #6 car next year. I thought that had already been decided with the rookie. Maybe that was just conjecture at the time. Could it be that the #6 car will be the car that Jack loses to get to the four team limit? Now wouldn't that be something?

Hmmm, watching the pre-race show today even adds more to this mystery. It seems that either Roush just didn't listen to Mark, or Mark just didn't make wishes known...or...was Mark really ready to step back and look for another owner?

Roush..."I was devastated!" I'd say that Jack was really taking Mark for granted and thought that since they'd been together for all those years, he wouldn't dare change teams, let alone make of car. Mark was probably tired of saying "Hey Jack, hey Jack" with Jack coming back with "Hang on Mark, I'll get back to you."

that make pretty good sence to me.:)
