May 20, 1956: Buck Baker drives the No. 502 Dodge to victory in the Virginia 500 at Martinsville, beating the No. 500 Dodge of Speedy Thompson by a half of a lap. The 502 is the highest-numbered car to win a Grand National/Cup race. Both cars are owned by Carl Kiekhaefer. Three cars lead laps: Baker leads 125, Thompson 259 and Herb Thomas, who finishes 20th, leads 116. And speaking of numbers, 12 cars in the field of 35 have triple-digit numbers, and one car, Rex White's Chevrolet, is recorded as having an "X."
