May 7, 1972: Here's a story that probably never will be repeated. Country music star Marty Robbins, quite the prankster, runs the Winston 500 with an illegal carburetor just so he can pass the big guns and see the looks on their faces. He starts ninth, finishes 18th but is DQ'd to 50th after he self-reports himself to NASCAR officials. Buz McKim, historian for the new NASCAR Hall of Fame, is at that race and says Marty put on a quite a show. When all is said and done, Robbins loses around $1,100 in earnings. To that, Robbins reportedly says, "It was worth it. In fact, I'd have paid that much money for a picture of Joe Frasson's face when I passed him." Frasson finishes sixth, two laps behind winner David Pearson.
