Mayfield, Blaney working together to improve
What does a team do when one car is faster than the other? They start moving setups over from the car of the driver who is posting the best times.
But what if that doesn't work either?
That's the question the Bill Davis Racing pair of Dave Blaney and Jeremy Mayfield faced during testing this week at Richmond International Raceway.
While Blaney was fast during the session, Mayfield struggled. They both kept throwing things at it, but Blaney's team was the one that managed to find ways to make things work.
"We've been happy with the car the whole time and happy again today," he said. "We've been able to learn some stuff because we've been throwing lots of things at it. When the car is really good and you can learn a lot, then that's a plus."
Mayfield, less successful in the session, tried to learn from Blaney's team during the test.
On Wednesday, he opted to try things that had worked for Blaney, but even that didn't work so well for the team.
"We've really thrown a whole lot of stuff at this car over the two days of testing," Mayfield said. "We're hoping that when we throw it all together, maybe we'll end up with something we'll be happy with. Right now we're just not real good.
"We pretty much have everything on the car that the No. 22 has on their car, but our car is just not acting like their car. They have been really good throughout the test and hopefully we can get a little closer to where they are by the time it's over. We're just struggling to get our car to perform on the track in the same ways that their car is performing."
