The F1 race at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia finished just under an hour ago.

Alonso and Renault took out the win in an action packed 58 lapper.

Action started before the race, with Montoya spinning during the observation lap and Alonso's team mate stalling on the start before a 2nd observation lap.

On the first corner Massa was involved in a high speed spin ending his race with a rear ender into the tyre wall. Australia's Mark Webber's team mate from the Williams F1 team was also a casualty after his rear wing was ripped off in the same incident.

Mark Webber lead the race for 3 laps before losing his clutch.

A second safety car was brought out after Michael Schumacher hit the wall on the last bend. He had 2 wheels on the grass before bottoming out on the shicane and swinging into the outside wall destroying the front left of his Ferrari F1. He managed to bring it safely to the inside of the main straight but due to the amount of debris he left on the track, the race was in full caution.

A number of other big names were taken out of the race with big wall hits and breakdowns. Both Ferraris and Williams were out within the first half of the race.

Overall 4-5 safety car periods took place, each time Alonso lead and managed to get a 2 second lead before the first corner showing the pure speed of his Renault.

The biggest incident waited until the last 2 corners of the last lap. Button was being chased by Fisichella to decide 5th and 6th postions. With one corner to go Button's engine let go, causing an amazing show of oil smoke, a massive flame and oil spilling everywhere, Fisichella almost losing it on the giant oil slick left by the Honda F1 car. Button's car stopped a mere 5 metres (approx. 14 ft) from the finish line.

One of the best AGP's I have ever seen.

  1. Alonso
  2. Raikonnen
  3. R Schumacher
  4. Heidfield
  5. Fisichella

I could not believe the start of the race. It was as if the Keystone Kops were chasing the Little Rascals who were chasing Laurel and Hardy.

Absolutely one of the most entertaining F1 races I've ever seen.

Should be noted that Button stopped short of the finish line on purpose. If he crosses the finish line with that blown motor, he'd be penalized at the next event. Since he technically DNF'd, he can change the engine and hold his next qualifying position.

Spectacular crash by Michael Schumacher! Both Ferrari's didn't finish. Montoya had the same problem with that curve, but didn't crash. I couldn't quite figure out what happened, but I think Matchett said that JPM probably hit the kill switch..?

Scott Speed finished 8th, and would have been his first FIA point. But, he was penalized for not paying sufficient attention to the yellow flags. He finished 11th as a result of the 25-second penalty.

Thanks for that Ryan, didn't realise Button stopped deliberately. Not all that sure of the F1 rules and regs.

Cheers.

But is the penality for the engine worth missing out on points? Even after being passed wasnt he able to cross and still collect some points or was eh that far down?

Good quesion natirex. But I will go to the F-1 site and check that out.
I knew if he crossed the finish line, he would be penalized the next race because he would have to put in a new engine.
JPM had a front end thing(?) that they replaced in his car and they weren't sure the "fix" was going to hold. It didn't, obviously.

JPM is my fav, but that race was one of the most exciting ones I have seen in F-1, or most of the other 4-wheel racing events.

This is the link that gives all the driver's views of what happened during the Aussie race.
8 more days till the next race.

I would really like to see what raikonnen could do with a consitent season, an JPM. Scott speed has a few yearsbefore he is gonna really compete it looks like but I am willing ot give him time i guess...

UPDATE: Just watching the friday practice round and the announcer said Jense Button could have taken 3 points IF he had crossed the line without being passed. If his season picks up (and it would seemingly need alot of help) he may regret losing 3 points... dunno...

P.S. The F1 race is on broadcast TV not SPEED channel this week, had me freaked out allll day trying to figure out why my DVR wasnt schedualed to record any thing but qualifying...
