Our union sponsored a golf tournament, captains choice on Monday. I joined in with three guys that I was a part of their original team from many years ago, though I hadn't picked up a club in three years. We had a great time and finished even par, but were probably the lowest of the low. The winners were 12 under but they had a real ringer, a semi pro who has won several district tourneys over the years. Get this, for $30 a piece, we got the green fees, a cart, breakfast and lunch, not to mention all the beer we could drink (Ice chests every third hole) We would stock up until the next set of ice chests. For another nine bucks for carts, my group played another 18 holes. For the second 18 we split with the two youngest playing the two of us who were the oldest. The youngest is 40 and his partner is 50. My partner is 56 and I am just shy of 64. We also played best ball and us old farts beat the young studs by one stroke. We had a lead of five strokes at one time, but as the day went on, we all began to tired, but I actually thought the youngsters were tiring more than us old seniors. We held a three shot lead for most of the 18 hold and going into the 18th, they were still confident they could win. Both my partner and I had pretty too tee shots that left us with a seven iron to the green. It was at 135 yards, but up hill so the seven iron seemed to be the iron to use. I wa sup first and hit a nice shot that went right a bit and hit in the middle of the green but went on back and into a bunker. Oh crap! Told my partner to shoot to the left and he too got off a nice seven iron shot that landed in the bunker on that side of the green. WE are laying twl so we have to choose which ball to use. Next their team was sitting about ten yards off the green in the front. Their first player skulled the ball and it went over the green. The second player easily picked the ball up with his clud and rolled the ball right at the cup where it hit the flag stick and bounded out about six inces. It began to look like we might tie at the most or possibly lose byone stroke if the could just make that smnall putt. They were then putting for abirdie while we were trying to get out of a sand trap and just get up and down to save the match. My first shot got out just okay but at least we were on the green. Ron then tried to put his best shot in place and failed, so we had to use my ball which was a good 20 yards from the hole. Their almost birdie left the ball about two and a half from the cup so we rode them hard. We needed to get up and down to have a chnce to tied them and a three putt would have been all she wrote, but it wasn't to be. We did indeed get up and down for a 6 on a par 5 but they were only able to achieve he birdie which finished it for them.
