Strong Quake Shakes Mexico

ASSOCIATED PRESS

MEXICO CITY (AP) - A powerful earthquake shook Mexico late Tuesday, sending residents spilling into the streets and knocking out power to large swaths of the city. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake struck shortly after 8 p.m. and lasted more than 20 seconds, immediately cutting electrical energy and phone service in many areas of the Mexican capital.

The government's Notimex news agency said the quake had a magnitude of 7.6 and was centered near the Pacific Coast in the area of Colima state.

National civil defense chief Carmen Segura told local news media that there were no immediate reports of damage from that general region.

Quakes of at least magnitude 7 are considered capable of inflicting heavy damage.

People rushed into the streets of Mexico City. Many barefoot or wrapped in blankets against the chill.

Police cars drove slowly through the streets of Mexico City with sirens flashing, telling people over loudspeakers that "everything is OK."

20 seconds is a very long time for an earthquake. No fun at all.

Glad y'all are OK, but the ironic thing is that a friend sent me a pretty sick "joke" yesterday about an earthquake in Mexico.
