Basketball great Michael Jordan will serve as grand marshal for the NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway on May 19, officials from the Charlotte Bobcats, Sprint Nextel and the track announced Tuesday.

Jordan, a five-time NBA most valuable player and six-time NBA champion, is the managing member of basketball operations for the Bobcats.

"It is an honor and privilege for me to serve as the grand marshal of the NASCAR Nextel all-star race," Jordan said in a statement. "Having the opportunity to take part in this event is a tremendous thrill."

Jordan, a native of Wilmington, N.C., will give the command for drivers to start engines.

"The fans are going to feel the energy when we start this all-star race," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, Lowe's Motor Speedway president and general manager. "Michael Jordan epitomizes elite status of a sport, so it's fitting to have him send our elite drivers to the track."

Hope they pay him allot. That divorce is expensive, I think they said 1.5 million?

Can you boo the Grand Marshall?
Would it be appropriate to throw beer cans at him? j/k...well...yeah I'm j/k
And, he played in the NBA? I've never watched a game so I didn't know that...

BP everybody knows who Jordan is even if they didn't know what the NBA is.

OTAY, I like Michael but Basketball has lost my interest in the past few years.

Oh, I thought he played minor league baseball for the White Sox farm team the Birmingham Barons. I've also seen his name connected with some minor golf stuff. Something about gambling with Tiger on the farthest drive or something. You say he played basketball too. Wow, he really got around.

I may have seen his name on some ugly red sneakers one time in a Foot Locker store as well...

Sad them ugly red sneakers cost lots of $$$$ and where UGLY too.

What the kids need to be buying are the Stephon Marbury, the Starburys, for $15. That makes more sense.

This is important news WHY?

Michael Jordan---Basketball
Jeff Gordon----Nascar

Both came into sports established by other greats & dominated from the start. Both will go down as disputably the greatest their sport has ever seen.

Besides, if Gordon sat in as commentator for an NBA game, it would be news-worthy, no ???

i think this is good for Charlotte....Jordon bought a good chunk of the Charlotte Bobcats and has not been seen in the public.

He played at the Wachovia Pro Am with Tiger here on Wednesday and is going to be the grand marshall for the all star race.

It's all marketing for the Bobcats....its badly needed.

smart move on his part and the Bobcats.

I'd compare Petty more to one of the forefathers of basketball that paved the way for everyone else . Gordon & Jordan(note name similarities) are very comparable in their dominance of a sport. To think Gordon hasn't reached that level of respect and prestige is to ignore the obvious, IMHO.

I guess I was just thinking Jordan & Petty have more global recognition... ie. Nike and the baby-blue 43 STP

It has nohing to do with Gordon's respect or prestige, just overall recognizability of each.

More to due with Dupont than Gordon... :)

Plus the fact that Gordon isn't done leaving his mark yet! :)

I am sad:( . I have bronchitis again and had to sell my all-star ticket. I was afraid I would not be better by then, with all the walking and everything over there. Last one I missed 10 years ago this year I started a new job and had to work and sold my ticket.

Sorry to here that TKJ. :(

Me too. Maybe next year my life will be back to normal.

I haven't even been able to ride my horse. I did get to go to Bristol. A friend that went had a handicap tag and we parked near were we sat. Afraid it is too late to try that at Charlotte for the All-Star race. I will have to visit someone that night though because I don't have speed.
