Michael McDowell

What happaned????

Car turned right on him going into turn 1 at sopme 200 mph, and he slammed the turn 1 SAFER barrier hard before barrell rolling some 10-12 times 10 feet in the air.

I think NASCAR deserves a :beerbang::beerbang::beerbang: for mandating all the safety equipment, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT - it just saved that young man's life.

I am at work... I want to watch video of that.... Anyone know where I can watch replays online yet?

Lap, watch the rerun of q'ing tonight.

I've never seen a wreck like that at Talladega or Daytona.

HAVE ..... YOU ..... EVER?!

That young man better go on air and thank Jesus, Mike Helton, John Darby and Brett Bodine. Had NASCAR not done a magnificent job stepping up in safety innovation, I'm not sure Jesus would've saved him.

I can tell you what, go on YouTube and watch some of the older fatal wrecks in NASCAR, F1, IRL and ARCA. I don't know that any of them compare to what that young man just lived through.

I've described the wreck but it doesn't do it justice. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well that video might take a few hundred thousand words.

The 1st impact with the wall was the worst, and one of the last flips it landed hard on the roof post. But since it was fliping, it was slowing down slow and not a sudden stop. Sudden Stops is what hurts the most and are deadly.

All of the time and money invested in this new car was just paid back.

I don't care if the car drives like a dump truck --- I LOVE it.

I'm sure there are about 43 Sprint Cup Series drivers in that garage area who just got a totally new perspective on this new car.

Personally, I'd love to have one of those as my street car. Most people around here die from an impact at 35mph or greater.

The COT rocks! :beerbang:

Big big props to Nascar on the build of the new car.

It saved his life.

TRL, i think we picked a good year for you to let go of the tickets.

I dont know that i coulda handled that live. Let alone sitting in turn 1.

There was one replay where you could hear the car hit the wall --- that was the most sickening sound I've ever heard --- and do NOT want to hear it again.

wow.......... I'm speechless........
and I will agree with Texasracelady...... that is a sick sound..... and that was what it sounded like on TV, imagine being there. I have been at a few savage crashes like that, and that is one sound that TV does NOT do justice to.... thank goodness for COT and SAFER barriers.....

That was incredible. I still can't believe that he walked away from that. it's a great testament to the construction and design of that car.

They even showed the wreck on On The Record with Greta Van Susteren tonight.

umm....is Maj still alive?

because if she was, i hope she wasn't by turn 1.

I purposely didn't watch trackside and sportscenter after the Wife told me about this "crazy crash by some guy driving the Aaron's car"; (gotta love a woman who loves NASCAR :)).

I am speechless after watching the qualifying replay. I KNEW it was coming (knowing the car number, etc.) and it still scared me. I was thinking the entire time; "that kid's dead." Even KNOWING he wasn't really hurt, I still thought; "he's dead". It was amazing to see him get out and really, be fine.

I think TRL said it best; I don't give a damn if it drives like a dump truck, I love the COT.

Burton said

Jeff Burton said the right thing (and he was pissed at the kid last race).

Burton said something like "They shouldn't have put the kid out there with all that junk on the track". Anybody who watched the replay sees a "puff of speedy dry" as he is getting into the corner.

One lesson learned though - never over-correct towards the wall.

NASCAR rules to live by - turn left - and if things go bad turn left more.

Unless you're heading into turn 1 at pocono with no brakes. Then i dont matter which way you turn (Jeff aimed left for the grass), you're still gonna knock the wall down.

I WAS THERE!!! It actually sounded like a bomb went off. As soon as that car hit the wall not a word was said from anyone in the stands UNTIL he got out of that car! I couldn't believe that he walked away from it. But, you have to give kudos to all of the safety changes that have been instituted in those cars.

Thats what gets me right there. I sat and watched how he was steering through that. The kid wasnt over correcting. The car should have just grabbed and come back straight, or nudged the wall. I think something else broke on that car like a ball joint or something was loose on the right side. The car shouldnt have snapped the way he was riding it out. But sliding sideways like that would be enough to knock something that was loose already to pieces on the right side suspension to cause the quick snap into the wall. I know it doesnt matter because he is ok, but man I would like to know.

I was at Bristol at the Busch race where Mikey had the bad wreck. I know what you mean Maj. Not one person in the stands made a sound till he walked away.

It's called oil-dry that wasn't picked up by the track crews completely.
