Michael Waltrip's Daytona-Winning Truck Team Penalized

After seeing half of Michael Waltrip’s spoiler laying flat following his Camping World Truck Series race win at Daytona on Friday night, it’s no surprise that NASCAR announced penalties for his team on Wednesday.

Waltrip’s crew chief, Doug Howe, was fined $25,000 and placed on probation for the rest of the year, while the No. 15 team lost 25 owner points.

There were no penalties for Waltrip himself, since he's not running for Truck points.

NASCAR said it was issuing the penalties for three reasons: “Any determination by NASCAR Officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules;” “Rear spoiler did not meet specifications in post-race inspection” and the oft-used “Actions detrimental to stock car racing.”

Some engineer is really, really good at his job. The spoiler did not break until the last lap. WOW! ;)

NASCAR has fined Vision Aviation Racing crew chief Doug Howe $25,000 and docked team owner Billy Ballew 25 points for a spoiler violation on the race-winning truck driven by Michael Waltrip in the season-opening Camping World Truck Series race last Friday at Daytona International Speedway.

Waltrip, who celebrated the emotional victory on the 10th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt’s death, does not get points in the truck series, so there was no driver points penalty.

On the final lap, Waltrip’s spoiler broke and the right half of the spoiler was laying flat. As a result, it did not meet the minimum angle requirements in postrace inspection. If it had happened before the final lap, Waltrip likely would have been black-flagged.
Waltrip passed Kevin Harvick Inc.’s Elliott Sadler on the final lap with the broken spoiler.

Did they say if the braces just gave out or did something else break?

Wouldnt suprise me if they had some new braces on there that let the spoiler flex a little bit to change it somehow. They must have flexed and broke finally at the end. Sounds dumb but there might be some sneaky crap doing on there.

Great minds think alike. I will delete the other thread.

I wonder how they set it up for it to do it at just the right time on the last lap and coming to the flag after turn 4.

I could tell you but then I would have to kill you. :D

Dang it... I was trying to kill this thread and then you guys responded. I give up.

NASCAR screwed up on this deal, they should have made the call yay or nay right away instead of waiting damn near the entire week after the race. As I watched Mike come to the line I didn't even think they were gonna give him the checkered flag but they did. At least he got to keep the victory...
