I wonder how this will affect ticket sales.

Michigan International Speedway's seating, mezzanines, concession and restroom buildings, suites and chalets will now be smoke-free, according to a track release.

The announcement follows a state measure banning smoking in public places which will take effect May 1.

Michigan hosts two NASCAR race weekends this season.

"Not only are we adhering to the law, but we are addressing a growing number of concerns from our race fans who do not smoke," MIS President Roger Curtis said in a news release. "Race fans who smoke can still do so in approved areas. We appreciate all our fans for their understanding and patience."

Smoking will be allowing in open-air areas behind the grandstands, in the New Holland Fan Plaza and in campgrounds.

The Champions Club, seating and adjacent patios will also be smoke-free.

I guess your girlfriend will have to bring her Kodiak and spit cup to the race now. :D

They make a big point to post for ticket sales that the McDonald's Family Zone is smoke free and alcohol free at Watkins Glen, but then you can't really smoke in the other grandstands either. I'm sure there's some who do, but I didn't really notice anyone near us. They were also chasing people away under the grandstand area in the pit terrace area and people were going all the way to the end of the fence to sneak one in away from security.

Interesting that Michigan is a "sister track" to The Glen and they're thinking about offering combined tickets to the two tracks. By the way, it's been illegal smoke in public buildings for a long time now. They won't let you smoke on hospital property either. I remember when they're used to be smoking lounges there. It was crazy to see all the doctors and nurses in there puffing away!

A couple of years ago the same thing happened in Tennessee. It didn't seem to hurt Bristol at all. People still go under the stands to smoke during the cautions.

What do hotdogs, bottled water, beer, etc..cost at MIS?And have those prices increased over the last 2 years?

I have not missed a race in over twenty years at MIS but I can't remember ever buying a hotdog, bottled water or beer at the track.

Why do you ask?

I know @LVMS there are no coolers allowed, and everything inside is Extremely expensive!!!!
As far as prices go, I was just wondering, was thinking about attending MIS next year for a race that coincide's with a family reunion planned for the same time frame.

Waterford has a "family section" No beer, smoking or bad language allowed. Seekonk has started a policy where no food or drink can be brought in. Sux for the people who bring youngsters and pack snacks. No seat backs either, you rent theirs. Some nights in the spring and fall it gets chilly for kids, no blankets.

No smoking in bars and resturants here, that sux.

Some of my best memories are from being in a smoke filled bar,,,,,,:beerbang::beerbang:

MIS allows soft sided coolers into the track and they are pretty liberal on the size. They also allow a clear bag with whatever you can cram into it.

Every year we see coolers the size of a car stacked up near the entrance...

Same at NHMS. You can watch as people go in and out to the "Mother" cooler for refills:beerbang:

No smoking? Kinda ridiculous, but one thing I definitely think they should never ban is alcohol. Drunk people are more fun than the race.

I agree. At monster jam last night, I watched a guy reach behind him for something, beer in hand. Half the bottle spilled onto his shoulder. Took him 2 or 3 seconds to realize what an idiot he made of homself.

TMS is so lenient it's funny. You can bring in anything you want. Max cooler size per seat is 12x12x12, but you can easily slide a 14 or 16" and they wont care. Fort Knox security scans your bags, and you go on your merry way.

I wonder if they'll ban burnouts as it's not like sucking back tire smoke is exactly healthy?

Illinois did this a few years ago too. Smoking is no longer allowed in any public building, and you must be at least 15 feet away from the entrance or open window to light up. This includes sports arenas, bars, restaurants, and casinos. Most hotels are smoke free as well. Individuals can get a fine for up to $250, and businesses can get $250 for a first violation, $500 for a second, and $2500 for each violation after that.

Since Chicagoland Speedway falls into the arenas category, there is no smoking in the stands. But you are allowed to smoke in certain areas.

Bristol has been smoke free for a couple of years but the people in front of us just lights up as usual.

How about just making smoking illegal in general? Never happen but might cut down on the people getting cancer. It amazes me with all the proof that smoking kills and if not kill does serious damage to the human body and it's still legal...

Because making something illegal doesn't keep it from happening. Instead, it's put control of the product into the hands of criminals - as it did in prohibition times.
