Read that Mike Helton is supposedly taking over running of DEI. The deal is rumored to be done with Helton being a part owner and president of DEI.

What are the chances of this and if it did pan out...whats Jr. think of it. Could this have something to do with Jr. not being signed yet.

Unless for some reason the deal changes, Mr. Helton is scheduled to be on Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain tonight. Perhaps someone will call in and ask about this deal.

The only place I have seen this was at Jayski's and even he is more than skeptical about it. As far as I know Mike's background in in racetracks, not race teams. On the other hand he and Dale were fairly close as far as these things go, so maybe he would be interested. But why would DEI pony up the bucks I'm sure Helton commands in his present position.

Mike might just be tired of the job he has. From the fans viewpoint it is the most thankless job in sports. However I think the drivers for the most part respect Big Mike...............

UPDATE: a source tells me that the Helton/DEI deal is done and that Helton will leave NASCAR and become a part-owner and the new President of DEI.(8-21-2003)

I agree Hardscrabble. From everything I have read and heard. the drivers do respect Mike Helton and feel he is always working to be fair and in thier best interest. Only the fans seem to feel otherwise, yet they do not know the man, knowing only the decisions he makes that they either do or do not agree with.

If were up to me, I'd hire Mike Helton is a minute. He has what it takes to do the job at hand. He also impresses me as the kind of guy who will tell you if he is capable of doing the job and not try to b.s. his way into something that might set him up for failure. IOW, he is a smart man who knows his limitations. If he takes a job with DEI or anyone else, it will be because he knows he can do it and do it right.

Would this mean that Jr. can now skip tech inspections? B)

Who would they get to slap Spencer around in the red trailer? :p

i sure hope this isn't true...

I sure hope jr can run fast, and in the right direction to RCR. Hopefully he'll forget the Eury's, I don't care if he takes Budweiser or the 8 with him. It might be nice to grab Mikey and/or Slugger on the way out to. If Roush can have a 5 car team, so can RCR. Ever since Dale died, I wanted RC to buy DEI or merge with DEI in some shape or form...

I heard this is true that Mike Helton is going to be the owner and president of DEI. I am trying to get hold of Ty Norris for more information,

Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a winning combination in RCR when he was in the Busch Series; now with DEI he's been faltering quite a bit. I'd like to see him in RCR maybe paired up with Kirk Shelmerdine or Kevin Hamlin as his crew chief, those guys know how to get him victories.
