Many of you will remember Mike Rich or the incident that claimed his life 24 years ago at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Mike was a tire changer for Bill Elliott on the #9 Coors T-Bird and was killed in a tragic pit road accident when Ricky Rudd lost control of the #5 Levi Garrett Lumina. Rudd came barreling down pit road and applied the brakes and his car spun and pinned Rich against the #9 whose tire he was changing. Mike Rich was 32 at the time of his death and the owner of a construction firm in Blairsville, Ga. I know Mike was not a driver but he performed an important job to racing each week and it was his death that made Nascar decide to adopt pit road speeds.
