MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson pleaded guilty Monday to charges of drug possession and driving under the influence stemming from a traffic stop last year as he was leaving a nightclub.

Tyson quietly acknowledged to a judge that he had cocaine and was impaired when he was stopped for driving erratically in Scottsdale on Dec. 29.

He pleaded guilty to a single felony count of cocaine possession and a misdemeanor DUI count and faces up to four years and three months in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 19. A felony charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and a second misdemeanor DUI charge were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

Defense lawyer David Chesnoff said Tyson has been clean and sober for eight months.

"It's obvious this was a crime he was committing against himself," Chesnoff said.

Police stopped Tyson after the boxer had spent the evening at Scottsdale's Pussycat Lounge. An officer said he saw Tyson wiping a white substance off the dashboard of his black BMW, and that his speech was slurred. Authorities said they found bags of cocaine in Tyson's pocket and in his car.

Tyson told officers later that he used cocaine "whenever I can get my hands on it," and that he preferred to smoke it in Marlboro cigarettes with the tobacco pulled out, according to court documents. He also told police that he used marijuana that day and was taking the antidepressant Zoloft, the documents state.

Since his arrest, Tyson checked himself into an inpatient treatment program for what his lawyer called "various addictions."

County Attorney Andrew Thomas said Tyson should be put in prison, noting that Tyson was convicted of rape in Indiana in 1992 and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault charges in Maryland in 1999.

"Mike Tyson is a repeat offender with a violent past," Thomas said. "I believe only a prison sentence will send the right message and properly protect the public."

That man is a maniac! If he is in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's prison, he'll be sleeping in tent city, eating bologna sandwiches and wearing PINK!

I know that he is a very violent person who has done some really screwed up stuff. I hope he gets a long sentence out of this if he is guilty (of course, there doesn't seem much doubt there).

But, there is a part of me that feels sad to see what has happened to this guy. I don't even know why I do, but I pity the guy. He hasn't done much to earn any sympathy. He has bullied, raped, abused drugs and other people virtually his whole life. But, there is still something very sad about seeing a guy who worked so hard to achieve athletic greatness (and make no mistake, at one point he was certainly GREAT!) and then just throw it all away. In his early 20's he was the heavyweight champion of the world and one of the most dominating fighters I have ever seen. Now he is a broke, freak show attraction about to go back to prison for a long time. He reminds me of Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry and many others who just couldn't stand success. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve everything he has gotten and will get for his actions, I am just saying this is a sad story.

Michael Gerard Tyson (born June 30, 1966) is a former American world heavyweight boxing champion and is the youngest man to have won a world heavyweight title. During his prime in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Tyson was one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. Nicknamed "Iron Mike Tyson," "Kid Dynamite" and "The Baddest Man on the Planet," Tyson adopted the Muslim name Malik Abdul Aziz, after his conversion to Islam while in prison for his rape conviction.[1][2] For his behavior both in and out of the ring, ESPN has ranked Tyson as the #1 Most Outrageous Character in modern sports history as determined by a panel of experts and an internet poll.[3]

Trained by Hall of Fame trainer Cus D'Amato early in his career, Tyson unified the belts in the splintered heavyweight division in the late 1980s and won many of his fights by knockout. Tyson knocked out his first 19 professional opponents within six rounds, stopping 12 of them in the first round. He reigned as undisputed heavyweight champion for over two years before losing in a shocking upset to Buster Douglas in 1990. He was convicted of raping a beauty pageant contestant in 1992, and after being released from prison in 1995, he engaged in a series of comeback fights before losing in another upset, this time to Evander Holyfield. In 1997, his rematch with Holyfield ended when Tyson bit off a portion of Holyfield's ear in retaliation for what he perceived as intentional headbutts. He fought for a championship again at the age of 35, losing by knockout to Lennox Lewis in 2002. After losing two consecutive bouts to journeymen, Tyson retired from competitive boxing in 2005. He has since engaged in a series of exhibition bouts in a tour across the US to pay his numerous debts. Despite receiving over US$30 million for several of his fights and $300 million over his career, Tyson declared bankruptcy in 2003.

Three hundred million dollar BUM!

I think he needs some Arpaio education as bad as any under his correction.. I have a mental picture of Mike in the pink duds, picking up trash with the rest of the chain-gang.
