Mikey the Road Ace? Rudd on Pole!

I cannot believe that no one here has commented on this yet. Michael Waltrip wins the outside pole at Watkins Glen?! Jeff Gordon qualifies 23rd?!! We have clearly entered Bizarro World, folks. Strap yourselves in...

If it weren't for Ricky Rudd playing spoiler, Mikey would have won the pole itself! And he acted so casual about it, too. Of course, it was early on when they interviewed him, and he probably didn't think it would stand up for as long as it did. My goodness, what testing and a jolt of self-confidence will do.

Congratulations to Ricky Rudd, though! :calpping: I'm hoping this is the beginning of a serious 2nd half charge for the championship. No one would expect it either at this point, given all the silly season shenanigans. He seemed to really savor today's pole for that reason. When pressed yet again for answers, he confirmed that all he knew was that he would not be returning to Robert Yates Racing. Apparently, it's now off his mind and he can get back to racing. He must already have that new contract fairly well firmed up.

Look out, top fivers... :)

Congrats to Rickey. Unfourtuanalty I dont believe in Mikey's road racing skills, and I dont believe that he will fair well on Sunday. But hey ya never know.

Oh, you're absolutely right about that, Awesome. I would be very shocked if he finished in the top ten Sunday, but stranger things have happened this year. (It seems I've been using that expression a lot lately.) Besides, I really can't afford to have him keep kicking Junior's butt like he's been doing. It's beyond embarrassing at this point.

Did you hear where Robby Gordon said something like, "Qualifying is one thing. Racing is a whole different story." And I believe he said this right after Mikey's lap. Heh.

But Hey ya never know...Jerry Nadue took no tires and stayed out and nearly won with car that was not nearly a winning car all day. O that reminds me...He shoved Bill Elliott right off the track to take the lead. When he blew up while leading I had A VERY large smile on my face.

Oooh, Abooja, I hate to disagree, but Mickey was NOT casual about his almost pole. On Trackside he went on about it for 5 minutes.....

But I will agree :) on the Ricky Rudd thing! Glad to see those guys are professional enough to put all the other crap aside and get down to biz! Go Ricky!

Oh, it figures that he went off on it on Trackside. The interview I saw was right after he qualified, and that was really early on.

I've still yet to see that show, for some reason. I taped qualifying, so I didn't finish watching it until a little while ago. I'll try to catch the rebroadcast of Trackside at midnight.

All NASCAR, all the time. :)

Mikey has qualified in the top ten here a couple of times before. Not a total shock. The car was good in practice and Ron Fellows is woiking with the team this weekend on setups and a little coaching. Good run and congratulations.

Rudd's first pole here, but Ricky is accomplished on the road courses and hopefully too mcuh of a professional to let the other BS affect his racing. Thumbs up for Ricky too!

If ya watch trackside, when they do their in car lap it is very disappointing. The worst bit of video I've ever seen them use. If you want to watch Rusty hands while he makes a lap without knowing where he is on the track or what the track even looks like in front of the car, it'll be just your cup of tea. Otherwise it shows nothing. Sorry just a little rant. The show is otherwise pretty good.

A big Congrats to Rudd :)

I saw that show, Mikey was his usual self.

Mikey makes me sick.

I agree with ya Paul, I wish DEI would drop him:mad:

Mikey is pretty annoying, he can be funny sometimes I have to admit.

thats something dei should be working on instead of just mainly working on the restrictor plate tracks and no this isnt a crack at dale jr or mikey just seems dei focuses on restrictor plate tracks when there worst event is road courses

When going into a road course, it's interesting b/c some drivers you know are going to run well b/c they are road racers, and others emerge.

Although Mikey's finishes don't reflect it, Michael has been becoming more and more competitive on the road courses. He was on track for a solid top-10 finish at Sears Point earlier this year before spinning. Michael's best finish at Watkins Glen in the past five years, according to one of HardScramble's stats I believe, is 17th, but he's put himself in a good position to improve on that this weekend. Good luck Mikey!!!!

And Paul, why exactly does Michael make you sick? Is it the fact that he's doing better than any of the other DEI cars? Is it the fact that he's having one of his best seasons and is starting to put himself in position to win every week? Is it the fact that he's driving a DEI car? What is it? You seem a little vague in expressing your opinion. Same to you, mngopherguy.

I'm glad you pointed this out, Hardscrabble! I noticed that too. Michael was having difficulty trying to give the play-by-play on that lap at first because the camera angle was of the interior of the car -- I guess, so that we could see Rusty shifting. You couldn't at all tell where he was on the track. What a dumb error.

However, I do think it's a great show otherwise too. It was really interesting seeing Robbie Loomis kick himself for doing so *poorly* this season. It gives you a good understanding of the type of pressure that particular team is under to succeed. And I really like that Todd Parrott. It's fascinating to me to hear the opinions of real, working crew chiefs and drivers both before and after a race. Very insightful stuff, there. :)

Michael Waltrip took the advice of the continent's best road racer and beat everybody but Ricky Rudd in qualifying at Watkins Glen International.

Hell Waltrip's road-course coach canadian Ron Fellows, a five-time winner of NASCAR events on the serpentine track, did a hell of a coachin job.

It's good to see Mikey doing good this time of th year!

:satisfied :beerchug: Go gett'em .............

I didn't know he had Ron Fellows coaching him now, Ron is one of the best at the road racing business. Rudd is the best, and who better to get advice from. Now let's see if he can keep that Napa car up front. Let's get people really sick of seeing Michael and have him win this weekend. Hehe.

There ain't nothing quite as entertaining as watching somebody puke. Go Mikey!:D :p

Yea...........him and Kenny are funny as hell at time's......
:beerchug:

I don't see how this can be a bad track for DEI, didn't park win here in 2000, and Jr. beat out one of them road course specialist in the busch series a few years back.

Yep, that's true. Everyone laughs and him and Michael for only being able to win plate races, but they all seem to forget how Junior does have a win at Watkins Glen.

And Michael is on the outside pole! Okay, that may be a fluke, but we'll just have to see, won't we? As long as he doesn't get spun out, I think he'll finish in the top 15. I'm hoping the same for Junior, but he didn't exactly shine in Happy Hour. :(

I have no promblems with DEI. I really like Jr., and Parks an alright guy as well. I just can't stand that stooge Waltrip. Like Paul said, he's a clown. I really wish they'd put someone else on with Schrader. Put put Kenny Wallace on there or something!!

Opinions opinions....I Like Mikey myself...to each his own....

So one win in WC means they own the track?

It's a bad track for them beecause they consistantly perform awful.

Another crap day for Junior, but I was right about Michael: 9th place ain't bad for a "never was", huh? :D

aw c'mon Paul.....9th ain't bad but it's nowhere near awesome.

Mikey is the class clown.....even got a young desert tortoise named Mikey. I didn't name him but I sure do think of DW's kid brother when I see him racing around the yard....he's always at the wrong track don't ya know:p

I sense a lot of hostility about Michael Waltrip. Don't understand it.

No hostility. One would have to take him seriously to be hostile towards him.

On the other side of the coin - what I don't understand is the amazement people have about him.

I'm amazed when I get used to someone sucking all the time, then they suddenly don't suck as much.

Mikey's not a bad shoe. And he did do pretty good today. But other than a couple plate wins, that's really all he ever does. Pretty good but not great today. Mostly just ok. But then I don't put drivers in to the great catagory easy.

Had he ever done in mediocre stuff what he's done lately I might think different. Dave Blaney is slowly making his way up my greatness scale, but Mikey hasn't even reached the pretty good mark yet.

It's like all the kids in the hot cars.....time will tell.

Took the words out of my mouth 71Fan...

Was gonna ask abooja if she's as amazed with Blaney as she is with Waltrip.

Abooja you need to get used it. Mikey has a big mouth and he talks a lot........it's refreshing to some of us and obnoxious to others. Almost like the stuff about Spencer (though Jimmy does more talking with the bumper of his car). I like Mikey and I think he did a great job with a 9th place finish......that is a top ten is it not?:)

Okay, y'all (may a Yankee borrow that?) -- Let's get one thing straight: I never said I was a Michael Waltrip fan. I don't think he's a particularly good driver and, up until a few months ago, I didn't like him at all. Thought he was extremely annoying and had a feminine voice. Then I got swept up into the whole DEI teammate thing, and now I find him to be a likeable enough fellow. Colorful beats boring any day. But I still don't think he's a good driver. And I'm, quite frankly, irritated that he's doing better than Dale Jr.

What part of this made you think I was amazed with Michael, Paul?

P.S. I think Dave Blaney is 20x the driver Michael Waltrip is. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
