Milk is now up to $4 a gallon on average and you can see the repurcussions. Ice Cream, cheese, and even Milk Chocolate as well as other dairy products' prices are crazy!

And this is bad. Cause me and Spok4 are milkaholics. Looks like we are gonna have to cut back.

Well since the "Mad Cow" disease is partly responsible for the milk price hike, I would say beef. :( Of course, Tyson's Foods would love that because of their chicken and pork farms!!

One word: WALGREENS!

All of them around here have milk for $1.99 a gallon and they can barely keep it stocked.

Sams club to is cheap..around 2.60 i think last time we were in there a week ago...... :p
grocery store forget it, they gouge you.......and after their 5 month strike here, they are gonna get every little penny to make up what they lost too.....

Oh my $4.00 a gallon....at our local SaveMart I pay $3.98 for 2 one gallons jugs...it's BayView brand and non-fat milk!! What I can't believe is how the price of eggs have gone up here in central Ca. $1.75 a dozen....seems it was just yesterday I was paying .99 a dozen!!! Yikes

Ah, Gollum, you haven't met me yet! I can down a whole gallon of milk in one sitting! LOL.

Wow 1.75 a dozen for eggs! I just got 5 dozen at Walmart for 4.14,better shop around. Milk is going up not because of mad cow, but due to the supply and demand. There is a shortage of dairy farms in the US, farmers can't meet the demand, plus the cost of feeding and overall maintenance has gone up(gas increases,utilities...ect).

Just remember that the farmers are not getting all of the increase. They at most get just half of the increased price. The middle man get the rest.

The small family dairy farmers have never gotten their just due when it comes to milk price increases. They did not get half and if history repeats, they will be lucky to get ten percent of the increase. The average small family operated dairy farmer has never gotten commensurate increases over the years yet endured the rising cost of a farming operation. If the dairy farmer were paid the margin of profit on his milk production a company such as Hershey's Candy or SMI for example, the average person could not afford to buy milk.

The funny part is, with the comments on milk prices, consider that nearly every one reading this has bought or regularly purchases, bottled water, which, in most cases, is tap water treated by the process of osmosis. The purchase price was more comparatively than for milk. Or gasoline.

Dairy farmers are a vanishing breed and one day milk production will come only from farms with thousands of cows. The small family farm with 100 to 150 head will no longer exist.

Another sign of a vanishing America.

I never said the dairy farmers were getting their just due, i said the cost to opereate a farm has risien and there aren't very many of them left. The prices always jump up due to the middlemen who charge more for their services.

to quote part of the WHIZ post...... "The funny part is, with the comments on milk prices, consider that nearly every one reading this has bought or regularly purchases, bottled water, which, in most cases, is tap water treated by the process of osmosis. I have a BRITA pitcher and the filters only cost about $15 a 3pack. These things filter out all kinds of nasty stuff incuding vile, odorific smell and taste.

Excuse me for a bit, I need to find a cow to milk............

Cows are a bit cumbersome to keep. Goats on the other hand would make a perfect pet. They are certainly cheaper to keep and easier to care for. They will provide 2 quarts of milk a day. And, goat milk is better for you than cow milk. Goat's milk contains 13 percent more calcium, 25 percent more vitamin B-6, 47 percent more vitamin A, 134 percent more potassium, and three times more niacin. It is also four times higher in copper. Goat's milk also contains 27 percent more of the antioxidant selenium than cow's milk. And, it is lower in lactose.

Thats all true about goat's milk but let me tell you......the stuff stinks to high heavens.....we had to give our son goats milk when he was just two months old cause of allergic reaction to whole milk...I just gagged everytime I poured in it the bottle....he didn't mind...drank it up like it was a cho. shake!

Some numbers.

1 gallon = 128 ounces 1 gallon = 10.66 cans of soda.

IF a can of soda cost $.35 (what I pay at work) then a gallon would cost $3.73, very comparable.

If a can of soda cost $.50 then a gallon would cost $5.33.

If a can of soda cost $1 (more likely if you go to a bar for a soda) then a gallon would cost $10.66.
