Milwaukee Mile board, NASCAR make agreement
By DAVE KALLMANN

For its first 99 years in business, the Milwaukee Mile ran all its major races during the day, but now a one-year trial is shaping up as a trend.

Boosted by positive reaction last May to the first nighttime race in CART Champ Car history, the venerable track has shifted the timing on its NASCAR weekend, as well, taking both Craftsman Truck Series and Busch Series races under the lights in 2004.

After months of discussion between Mile and NASCAR officials, the move became official Tuesday at a board of directors meeting for the State Fair Park, which owns the facility.

The 200-mile NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race is now set for Friday, June 25, and the 250-mile Busch Series event for Saturday, June 26.

"I think it's pretty cool," said Travis Kvapil, the Truck Series champion and a native of Janesville. "I watched the CART race last summer and hardly recognized the place on TV.

"I love night racing, and it's better for the fans. There's just a little more excitement, it seems like, in the air. You get to see sparks fly, and (the cars) always look faster at night."

That increased excitement is precisely the reason for the change, said Mark Perrone, general manager for the track.

The Mile had contemplated racing the trucks at night in the past as a way to boost attendance for that division. Discussions with NASCAR led to taking both races under the lights.

Good for this track it needs all the excitement it can get. They should re do it like Miami to make it possible for 2-3 lane racing. Then they will have an awesome track. But with the lights I might go to check it out anyways.

I think it would be cool to have a little Homestead track...hint hint to New Hampshire too.

Don't give 'em any more ideas...ticket prices are already way too high for a Busch race.

They had to do something...the Busch race was going to be going head to head with the Cup race at Infinieon. After bumping up ticket prices from $9 to $14 for the 2nd straight year & with most of the top Busch drivers from this season moving up to cup next year, I bet they would have lost their butts trying to compete with the Cup race.

$14 where did you buy your tix? Mine were like 25 for the truck race and 30 - 40 for the busch race i cant quite remember.

Always from the Mile Ticket office. What I meant was they raised the price between 9 & 14 dollars per ticket over the past two seasons. The 2004 prices are...

Busch race
79 for sec 400 (last year this tic was 65 & the year before I believe it was 55)
69 for sec 300 (last year this tic was 60 & the year before it was 47)
59 for sec 200
29 for sec 100
upper bleachers are 39
lower bleachers are 19

Truck race
49 ~ 400
39 ~ 300
29 ~ 200
19 ~ 100
ub's are 19
lb's are 9

I dont understand that price raise either there werent any cup stars in the race. Harvick was in the truck race for 6 laps but I think he was the only cup driver there.

I'm assuming they're trying to get the new grandstands paid for. I wonder why they didn't force feed it down the taxpayers throat like Miller Park?
