Minor Adjustments

NASCAR considering minor changes for Daytona: NASCAR will consider minor adjustments to reduce the possibility of engines overheating prior to the Daytona 500. But otherwise officials were pleased with the results of Saturday night's Budweiser Shootout, the first race since implementing changes to reduce tandem racing. Vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said before Sunday's qualifying for the 500 that complaints from teams about overheating were "moderate'' at best. He said changes could come in the form of opening up the front grill slightly to allow more air flow or adjusting the pressure release valve. Pemberton said NASCAR will re-evaluate later in the week with temperatures expected to be much warmer during Thursday's qualifying races and Sunday's 500 than it was during the Shootout held at night. "We said all along there was potential to make adjustments,'' Pemberton said. Pemberton said there are no plans to tell drivers they cannot bump draft in the corners or make adjustments in the spoiler height to provide more stability. There were three major wrecks of eight, six and nine cars in the Shootout. "The drivers know they can't push on the left rear end,'' Pemberton said. "They have to get acclimated.''(ESPN.com)(2-20-2012)

The fact that the drivers can't push on the left rear is just a fraction of the deal here.

If the guy that is in the lead decides to move up the track, it's almost certain doom. Unless you have a track bar like Kyle B has and it acts like a rudder on a boat when it hits the pavement!

NASCAR is pretty much in a no win situation here. Fans overwhelming panned the 2-car tandem type of racing at the restrictor plate tracks. Fans preferred the pack racing as compared to the tandem. Pack racing vs. tandem racing. Those seem to be the options. Don't even fool yourself for a second thinking that these cars will run unrestricted at either of these two tracks to separate the field. Not gonna happen.

Bud Shootout - Past five years

2012 - 48% or 12 of 25 cars crash out of the race
2011 - 38% or 9 of 24 crash out, another out with engine issues
2010 - 38% or 9 of 24 crash out, another out with engine issues
2009 - 50% or 14 of 28 crash out, another out with engine issues
2008 - 22 % or 5 of 23 crash out

They crash a lot when they're running for that big paycheck.

What happens if/when they do open that air flow a little bit? My guess is if they do the drivers will certainly take advantage of it by trying to run that tandem longer. If they don't open it up more then there may be a risk of overheating.

True enough. The drivers are driving these cars. Not NASCAR.

This just in.

NASCAR has increased pressure release 10 pounds to help with potential overheating.....

If I got this right the new pressure relief valve setting 28 psi. Was 25 psi. Temps to be in 80s tomorrow, was on 60s for Shootout.

The new rule likely will give teams ability to run engines about 10 degrees hotter, at least for a period of time.

UPDATE: SPEED's NASCAR Live reports that NASCAR made a change, allowing the teams to change the PSI on the radiator pressure release valve from 25 psi to 28 psi.(2-22-2012)
