Aug 29th. WooHoo!!!

Track record at Thompson, one of if not the fastest track they run, is 122.090 in 18.429 seconds. It's a 5/8 mile asphalt track banked at 26' .
I wonder how fast they'll be at Bristol with the variable banking up to 33' and concrete.

I fear a road trip.:D

btw, I hope they let them run and not issue restrictor plates. <boo hiss>

SST55, that will be on August 19th, a Wednesday and the northern boys will again go up against the southern boys. This is one that the wife and I want to attend. And this time, I hope that when one of our southern boys wins, he isn't disqualified like the past race at Martinsville. BTW, the boy that won that race did it again in the North/South Shootout at Concord Motorsports Park. Of course at that race, anything goes...so that TC wasn't the cause of disqualification. :) You see, that race isn't sanctioned by NASCAR.

That will be some week at Bristol with the Mods on Wednesday, the trucks Thursday, the limited Cuppers on Friday and the Cuppers on Saturday.

I think that is a double-header on Wednesday. The truck race is always on Wednesday. But you can come on down to the Gap on Thursday. They have the SCORCHER on Thursday.

Yer right about that. I misunderstood the schedule. The mods will run with the trucks. Hope to catch those races.

I thought I read the 29th but see Bristol has it scheduled for the 19th. I'm taking the fifth and blaming my fat fingers.:p That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I just got a dvd from Na$car from the Modified banquet, haven't watched it yet though.

Today might be a good time, more snow,,,,:mad:

Buck, what was the guy disqualified for?
Unauthorised modifications. What most believe, and my insider agrees, is that Burt Myers used traction control, something that the high dollar teams at Bowman Gray Stadium use (illegally). The device is easily removed, but the tale tale evidence is the wiring harness. There was also another modification that wasn't allowed, but I forgot what that was. As mentioned earlier though, Burt beat the same competition at Concord Motorsports Park, but the race wasn't sanctioned by NASCAR and just about anything goes there. Next year the mods will run at that track with NASCAR though.

I remember the year we went to Bristol and Sammy Swindle took an exhibition lap in his WoO sprint........ and I was like WOOOOOOOOO......lol. ( Course this was just a promo, and they would put dirt down but still, Sammy was on the hammer pretty good......lol. Should be kinda the same thing with the mods...... used to love to watch them at N Wilksboro........

I'm a long time fan of Thompson Speedway, been watching races there since 1967 when i was 6. Back then the turns had dirt barriers and also the backstretch was like that. Cars would get airborn over the dirt, man it was something to see, some scarry stuff! First class operation down there now, place is really run well, newly paved about 3 years now too. The super modifieds have run there a few times, wicked is all i can say! Thompson was the Nations' first asphalt track i believe. Would be something to see the Mods run Bristol might have to take a "road trip".

Thompson was the first paved track;

By the standards of the day, a 5/8ths mile, high-banked racetrack was huge. Most tracks had dirt, boards or bricks as surfaces and were ¼ mile in length or less. But, in spite of the critics, Hoenig persevered and on May 26, 1940 the gates opened for the first time to a capacity crowd. The word of this new “super speedway” spread across the country and soon Thompson became know as the “Indianapolis of the East.” Nearly every big name driver in the country set his sights on Thompson, CT. The track became a Mecca for auto racing drivers and fans.

Waterford, stafford and Thompson are all great tracks.

I saw my first modified race at Stafford back in 1965 , I was only 4 so I don't remember too much except a lot of dust. That was the last year it was dirt, but at least I can say I was there......lol. I think I fell asleep after the first or second heat. I've been down there a few times since I moved back to Ma. in 2005, it is really a great track. I used to love it when all the southern big name modified drivers would come up for the big races in the late 60s and early to mid 70s, that was some great racing. The local guys would sometimes put a big "whoopin" on the southern boys, guys like Bugsy Stevens, Eddie Flemke, Gene Bergin, and Freddy Desaro. Those were all my heroes in racing when I was growing up, my dad and I attended a lot of races back then and it was special to go with him and his buddies .....to be included in the "inner circle" so to speak. My dad knew a lot of the mechanics and some of the drivers back then, so I would always get some juicy inside info about some drivers equipment being no good or his stuff is illegal , but he hasn't got caught yet. Great stuff for a 10 year old who dreamed of driving a mod someday. That never happened, but racing was in my blood form 1965 to now and it hasn't ever really left. I've seen a lot of ups and downs at the loacal track level, so now I can't help but think at the Cup level there will some major hills and valleys, and more likely valleys in the future of the sport.
