DirecTV is doing away with its NASCAR Hot Pass programming this year. The decision brings an end to the five-year-old service that gave subscribers four channels of in-car-driver video and audio. The distributor opted to discontinue the service because of its cost. DirecTV also decided to end its sponsorship of NASCAR. It had been an official partner of the sport since '07. It is looking for other ways to stay involved in the sport and plans to set up displays at some racetracks this season. DirecTV Senior VP/PR Darris Gringeri said, “We tried to charge for the (Hot Pass) product a few years ago, but the demand for it was low. We decided to switch to a free service. It’s been great and we’ve been happy with it. It’s been a differentiator. But in the end, the production cost became too much to bear.” DirecTV made the decision to end its NASCAR sponsorship and discontinue Hot Pass last month. The offering was expensive because DirecTV had to sublicense the video rights to in-car-camera footage from NASCAR rightsholders Fox, Turner and ESPN.

The moment that they made that first available as a pay service I subscribed to it. Back then I believe that we had ten channels or so, each with its own announcing team. Realistically though all they needed was the Jr. Channel. Eventually the number of channels was reduced and the announcing teams eliminated. Then it went down to just the HD channel version. I guess the writing has always been on the wall.

Not to worry though I'm betting. I think that there are going to be good alternatives and soon. They will cost $'s I'm sure but there's a market for that service.

I think this is all the storm before the calm. o_O Seriously, I think we are going to see things here this year that will make HotPass obsolete or at least an afterthought.

Sounds like wishful thinking from a guy who just switched to direct TV. ;)
Me? No. I am on Dish Network in my house. I dropped DirecTV late in the NASCAR season this past year. That's why Matt was on me for losing HotPass and so on. I do still subscribe and pay for a DirecTV connection for my parents but that is only until the two year commitment is up. After that I'll be switching them to Dish too.

I really didn't like losing HotPass but I could not pass up the whole home DVR service that Dish has. DirecTV would not even compete on price so that was the deal breaker. HotPass be damned. Looks like I made the right move.

All I want is racing coverage, and football. If I ever figure out how to get it on line, I will discontinue directTv.

MOTHERFU!#@%!#$%^@!#$%^@!#^@$#%^@$%^@$%^@$%^ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well this seals it. I'm buying a laptop or tablet and subscribing to the full Race View package.

I'm having trouble with the fact he doesn't already have a tablet or laptop.

I've been holding out. I am afraid to buy something then have it become obsolete 6 months later. Right now I'm in phone hell because I chose a device that's 7 months (and counting) late to get ICS. And I am undecided on what to get first. A tablet or a laptop? Which one? Should I build my own laptop? My home PC is sweet but I can't very well watch TV from my computer desk. Man I got white people problems.

Get one of the new Microsoft Surface computers.

Hey Matt, are you mad? :D

Not MoeJoe or Matt but DirecTV HotPass seems to be the hot topic right now on NASCAR Radio today.

I can't imagine too many people were using it since most probably didn't know it was being offered for free the last few years. I would use it some, mainly on plate tracks or somewhere like Bristol where something could happen in an instant.
