Organizers Cancel Monster Truck Shows In Madison
Shows Were Scheduled For Friday, Saturday
Updated: 10:05 pm CDT October 7, 2009
MADISON, Wis. -- The monster truck shows set for this weekend in Madison have been canceled due to slow ticket sales.
Dirt was brought in to the Alliant Energy Center and some of the cars to be crunched had arrived in Madison Wednesday before organizers pulled the plug,
The Monster X Tour event was set less than a year after an announcer was killed at a similar show in January when he stepped out in front of a monster truck and was run over. Federal officials ruled the announcer's death an accident.
But the organizers, who are not connected to January's Monster Truck Nationals event, said tickets simply weren't selling.
Earlier on Wednesday, Danny Torgerson, owner of Monster Truck Entertainment, said he thought sales would be slow.
"I totally would understand if people would elect to not come to this event, and I understand with the traumatic experience of the last one, they might not want to go. I'm totally OK with that; this type of event is a lot different than what has been coming to the Alliant Energy Center," Torgerson said.
Torgerson said this time of year is slow for motorsports events sales and they took a chance to see what would happen.
Some personnel had already arrived in Madison Wednesday to begin setup, WISC-TV reported.
