Juan Pablo Montoya has been fined $10,000 and placed on probation for the rest of the year by NASCAR for an "inappropriate gesture" the driver made during a Busch Series practice session last Thursday at Phoenix International Raceway.
The gesture was captured on Speed television, and the Chip Ganassi Racing driver apparently didn't know the camera was being used for live TV.
His Chip Ganassi Racing team won't appeal, a spokesperson said.
"I really feel bad that the incident happened." Montoya said in a statement from the team. "It was only meant as a joke to one of my friends. I completely understand NASCAR's point of view and their decision."
He was fined under Section 12-4-A of the Busch Series rule book (actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the NASCAR Busch Series rule book).
Also, Todd Brewer, crew chief for David Gilliland's No. 25 Team Rensi Motorsports Busch Series Ford, was fined $2,500 for unapproved, hollow jacking bolts.
