Montoya

But not everybody is in 3rd place and within a whisker of leading the Chase.

I believe it will come down to Johnson, Gordon, Martin and Montoya. Any one of them can win it.

Anyone still think he isn't a serious championship contender?

Contender, yes.

Serious contender, no. Unless he can catch up with and beat Jimmie to the checker flag, no one is a serious contender. JJ and the 48 team are Bulletproof (I really hate saying that). Only a screw up from someone else at somewhere other than 'dega, or a serious engine malfunction will sideline them. Mark Martin and Montoya are running their guts out trying to beat Jimmie, but as old Ric Flair used to say and I quote,"To be the man, you gotta beat them man, whhooooh!!!". As much as it pains me to say, JJ is the man.

I think Montoya is a very serious contender.

But I don't think he'll win the Chase unless Johnson has major issues and chokes. Montoya could probably beat Martin for in the Chase standings, but Johnson only if he has problems.

BTW, Montoya is the only driver to finish all 4 Chase events so far in the top 5. That's Champion material right there.

Nobody can beat Jimmie. As long as they have the same tracks in the Chase and have this points system, he'll win it every year.

I say get rid of one of the mile in a halfs and put a road course in there. Then we will have it all, Short Tracks, Restrictor Plate Race, Mile and a Half, and a Road Course who ever wins could say they had to out perform on every style of track.

Jimmie wouldn't win the championship if there was a road course in the Chase.

NHRA does it just right -- 6 races and they change the Countdown tracks every year.

Anybody who think anybody but Johnson will win the chase is gonna be let down. He will win the next 100 championships. that 48 crew has this whole thing down to a science go 80% the first 26 races, make the chase then go all out the last 10 where you excel at every one of those tracks. They have a great driver an great team great car and the best crew chief ever. And they work well together no big egos there. That team is a machine.

Top 5s each week are good...but it will take some wins when Johnson and Martin finish top 5 as well. At first I thought consistency would win it, but when the others are contenders are finishing good,,,its gonna take some wins.

There are still 6 races to go. I expect some good racing from many of the drivers and anything can still happen. Way too early to concede it to JJ. And, Buckaroo was right, don't count Tony out yet.

And, since this is a John Paul thread, thought I would mention that JPM has brought many, many fans to Nascar. I checked out another forum from over the pond and they had 69 posts on the race, most of them fans of JPM.

My heart says GORDON
My head says Johnson will be hard to beat

I agree with you. :( I also agree they need to change the tracks they use each year as part of the Chase because if you follow HMS like I do, you will know those 10 are all some of the best tracks for Jimmie. Andy is right. It's known at HMS by all the drivers and personnel. It's known by anyone who totally follows the main drivers closely. Chad and Jimmie do have it down to a science.

I do think it's going to be bad for NASCAR if JJ wins again. People are tuning out and the stands are definitely not filling up. People are sick to death of Jimmie winning the Chase. People are cheering for ANYONE BUT JJ at this point, unless it's his fans. Two years ago, they were sick to death of it becoming a 2 person Chase with Jeff and Jimmie. Right now with 3 HMS cars cars in it and doing relatively well, people are sick to death of it being almost an HMS Chase since they consider Tony part of the organization because he gets their equipment from them.

Yes, it would have been a different champion a few times if it was the old points system, but that's gone no matter how much we complain about it. The only thing we can hope for is they do sme tweeking on the COT because it's BORING for a lot of the race, esp. when they're at a track where passing is near impossible and the only place they gain spots is in the pits. It's sad when people are hoping for cautions so we can see a double-file restart where something may change in the first couple of laps.

Even if Jeff can't win, I want to see anyone but JJ win. I'm sorry, but I don't think you can compare Chase championships to the old ones where they won due to their performance for the whole season.

Here's hoping I'm wrong and someone pulls far ahead of JJ, preferably Jeff, but I don't see that happening unless JJ has more than one mulligan. I'm not giving up hope yet that someone else might win. NASCAR needs a different Champion this year or more and more TVs are going to be tuning out or stay off and the crowds will continue to get thinner at the tracks.

Me?

I'd really like to see Montoya in the 88 car! I betcha he would turn even more heads with that team.

That would be interesting to see. JPM had done a great job improving the last 3 yrs. He still worries me though because I can just see that "edge" in him that could get a little too wreckless and take not only himself, but others out. That being said, I know it can happen with anyone, but we all know there's certain drivers who aren't exactly known for patience. ;)

Even though I wrote what I did above regarding JJ probably winning again, I will spend the next 6 wks hoping and cheering on Jeff and the others so that JJ doesn't win again. I think announcers during races shouldn't be so partial and I get really ticked off when they're more or less giving JJ the trophy already. Not so fast there!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds to me like other organizations need to get off their collective butt's and get to work. I don't like to see him win all of the time either but changing the tracks because someone is good at them, you gotta be kidding me! Why don't they just hand out a trophy to all of the Chase drivers like they do in Little League so nobody feels bad? Then everyone can be happy.

Jeg Coughlin's Nickname in NHRA is "The Robot".

If Jeg is a robot, what does this make Jimmie?

No, don't wish that on Pablo. The 25, I mean 88 car is jinxed with the ghost of Tim Richmond. That car is gonna be junk. Jinxed I tell ya.
