49ers release Mariucci from final year of contract

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com

Steve Mariucci is out as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

49ers general manager Terry Donahue told ESPN.com's John Clayton today that Mariucci has been released from the final year of his contract and no longer is the team's head coach.

Sources told Clayton that there were philosophical differences between Mariucci and John York, the owner's representative, about Mariucci's role within the organization. Sources said that Mariucci had been asking for the title of vice president of football operations.

Former Vikings coach Dennis Green and 49ers defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr. might be candidates to replace Mariucci.

The 49ers' season ended on a disappointing note with a 31-6 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday in the NFC divisional playoffs.

After Sunday's loss, York reiterated that the 49ers wanted Mariucci to return for the 2003 season. At the time, Mariucci was also adamant that he wants to coach the team next season -- even if the two sides could not agree on an extension.

Yeah, Green or Mora Jr. are gonna do SOOOOO much a better job there...

What they need is a QB. Some D wouldn't hurt, either.

What they need is a defense, Garcia is fine...I think he proved that against the Giants no?

There's worse QBs, but he hasn't shown me the ability to carry a team yet.

Take McNair. Solid QB, no question. No rings yet. But I'd take him over Garcia any day, because he has shown that he can literally carry a team for a time if needed. Same goes for McNabb, Gannon, even Manning, although he's the most overrated player in the NFL IMO. But Garcia...maybe he's too vanilla, I dunno.

I'm not saying a QB has to be the WHOLE team (read Michael Vick), but he should be one of the lead dogs. That's what has me a bit confident about Tampa Sunday. Brad Johnson ain't no Hall of Fame QB, but that teams clicks when he's there. He's the lead dog on offense, and that says a lot when Keyshawn is on the roster.

Watching Gannon play makes me smile. One of my favs for sure.

Looking at the lines now and TB is a 4 point underdog...gonna be a tough game. Oakland has moved up to an 8 point fav...uh oh.

I'm tellin' ya, Oakland is gonna go all the way!! I say its gonna be the Raiders and the Bucs in the Super Bowl.. and Raiders will win it..

Might be more impressive if you made that bold prediction 5 weeks ago...you've only got 4 teams to pick from. :)

I said the same thing a few weeks ago.. you told me not to be so sure of myself.. (something like that)

Noooooo... no no no, I'm not for them.. but that game with them and TN was a good one..

I've been for the Raiders the whole time.. Gannon is really impressive..

Definately, and now is their best time to do it...but I think there will be an upset.

This is one of the few years that the Raiders have left to win it... Gannon is getting old, Rice is over 40.. Brown is getting up there, etc.. but they are still kickin' ass.. and thats all that matters.

Which translates into the coach didn't go to the Super Bowl, so he's fired.

Never really like San Fran anyway but he was a good coach. I hope they lose every game next year to show that maybe the "philosophical differences" might not have been so bad after all....

Jeff Burton is a NASCAR driver TWF.

Jeff Burton fired his CC for reasons I still don't understand.

The only thing I was able to gather from it was because he wanted to blame someone for his terrible performance. Wasn't winning races so it had to be someone else's fault.

Jeff Burton fired him, or Jack Roush fired him?

Either way, I'm glad BDR hired him.

I think Burton whined enough to Jack to get him a new CC.

I always liked Ward better anyway, Jeff's a whining primidonna. Ward just races with what he's got and does a damn good job with it.

I obviously prefer Ward over Jeff. Jeff does seem to thrive in the rain. But he never bothered me that much either.

I still say Jeff got the leftovers at Roush in 2002, and one of the others will take their turn with the second rate stuff in 2003.

And THAT, folks, is a prime example of the phenomenon we like to call...

THREAD DRIFT!!!

Mariuchi was not the problem in San Fran. The defense, players and coaches combined, are the weakest link in an otherwise strong chain.

I'd love to see the 49ers recycle Mora one more time. That would pretty much eliminate them as a threat for the next several years. Although he is a good defensive coach, he hasn't won a big game since Hector was a pup.

He's a horrible defensive coordinator! Their defense was absolutely horrid this year.

They should hire Denny green and then they'll see playoff defeats!!

Mooch say he isn't taking any job for next season. I think that way he can stick it to the 49ers for the 2.25 million they owe him. Damn I'd like to make 2.25 million some year not working!!

I was shocked when I found out:( Steve did a good job coaching the Niners and I think they should have kept him.

Jim Mora? Now there's a way to kill a football team......:D

Mora is a fool. Although its was fun to watch him break down infront of the media every other week.

Playoffs? Playoffs?

I still cant figure out why they got rid of him He was a hell of a coach
