•NASCAR Hall of Fame attendance for June: Attendance at the NASCAR Hall of Fame fell nearly 40 percent in June compared with the same month a year ago, a development that could bring more cost-cutting to the city-owned hall. Unofficial numbers released Wednesday showed 17,604 people visited the hall in June, compared with 28,678 people in June 2011. Second-year attendance declines for attractions such as the hall aren't unusual, as initial excitement wears off. But the hall's budget for fiscal year 2012 calls for admissions from ticket revenue to increase by nearly 20 percent. Attendance in May was also down compared with the same month in 2010. Last year, 35,979 people attended the hall during the 21 days it was open. This year 25,034 people came during the entire month of May. If those attendance declines continue the hall could face a multi-million dollar loss for the current budget year.(Charlotte Observer)(7-14-2011)

I have no Idea why that built that place. There's not enough people interested to keep it going...Sure the die hard race fans will go but it's not enough.

I'm guessing they did it to try and make NASCAR more like a stick & ball sport.Which it is not.

Why didn't they put in a destination city, like Daytona Beach? How many people go to Charlotte for vacation?

I still don't think that would have saved it either...Didn't they have some NASCAR place that couldn't stay open....NASCAR CAFE or something....

I expect the NASCAR Cafe will open up in another casino. The reason it had to close is because they closed the casino that it was in, the Sahara Casino (the sixth casino built on the Strip), due to it's inability to compete with the newer mega-casinos.

Good point. Maybe NASCAR felt putting the NASCAR HOF in Charlotte would make a lot of the transplanted drivers more accessible for meet n' greets. I don't know.

40% is a significant drop.

oh, Vegas...sorry I thought there was something in Daytona
Edit: I was thinking of Daytona 500 Experience/Daytona USA

They closed that also to everyday viewing didn't they. It's only open for special functions and parties.Isn't it?

Putting something in Daytona doesn't guarantee success. The Winston Cup Preview was held in Winston Salem for many years and it grew each and every year. This was an RJ Reynolds sports program, run by years of experienced people. NASCAR wanted to take control and moved the "preview" to Daytona to be in conjunction with speed weeks. It has never seen the success it had in WS where it was only on for one day. The choice of Charlotte for the HOF was probably for a number of reasons, one of which is that it is the closest to the majority of race shops. Many people have stopped to visit different race shops when they are in the area and I'm sure NASCAR thought the HOF would attract most of those people. I live but 90 miles from Charlotte and have yet to go. I was telling the wife just today that we should visit it some day. She said, why not visit Childress' vineyards first? Where's the priorities? ;)

The key words in your post for the reason of the "preview" failure. "NASCAR wanted to take control".If RJ Reynolds would have stayed in control it probably would have lasted longer.

I'm a bitter Alabama native, so I'm glad to see that it's struggling.

Long live the International Motorsports Hall of Fame :beerbang:

NASCAR thought putting Ritchie Evans in the hall of fame would attract the yankee, open wheel fans to the Hall of Fame. That's proving to be inaccurate.

There was a NASCAR Cafe in Orlando I believe. It was off I4, south of town, on the way to Disney. I had heard that it shut down, but didn't know for sure.

Andy, since 2004 any time I see those two words together (NASCAR and think), red flags start going up all over the place. It seems that it's almost always a precursor to a screw-up.

That was Race Rock Cafe on I-4 they closed a few years ago due to the owners legal/financial issues not related to the restuarant.
It was a cool place to see some interesting pieces from of all forms of racing, food was'nt that great for the price though. They auctioned off the majority of racing related items they had on display.

I see NASCAR is starting to promote Bill Jr's widow, Betty Jane France, for her charity work through the NASCAR foundation. I'm sure she'll be in the hall soon. I think that NASCAR should induct 5 people from the racing side of the sport (drivers and Crew Chiefs) and have supplemental inductees for team owners, track promotors, NASCAR big wigs and people key to charity work. When people involved in the show everyone watches the sport for get bumped by someone on the business/charity side of things, fans resent them, no matter how deserving they are.

They should sell the sponsorship rights to who ever is willing to pony up the money. Then downsize it, and make it a traveling exibition, at every race track during the season.....You could probably get 20-30k people to walk thru it every weekend at each race. Keep the price low....like $6-8.00 for an adult...7-16 y.o. maybe $3-4.00....kids under 7 FREE WITH A PAYING ADULT.........

Maybe they could let Bruton work out the details and planning. :sarcasm:

I only live about 3 hours from Charlotte, so I am wanting to get down to the hall really bad, myself. I guess I better plan that trip a little sooner if I actually want to see the thing open!

On a side note, I think the reason the "Nascar Cafe" has not done well is have you ever been in one?!? The pirces are UNREAL! Their is one that is shut down in pigeon forge. The NASCAR speed park there is still open, however.

Richie Evans was a worthy selection. I don't want to see anyone going in for any other reason than their actual merits.

I don't think his selection was political, or that his inclusion should be discredited.
