Some more odd owners points 'swaps?: hearing that Frank Stoddard, owner of the #32 FAS Lane Racing team, has worked out a deal where the #55 Michael Waltrip Racing team [Mark Martin and Michael Waltrip as drivers] gets the 2011 owners points and a guaranteed starting spot in the Daytona 500 and next four races. Supposedly Terry Labonte will be the driver of the #32 Ford in the Daytona 500 and will have the past champions provisional to use if needed. Then the twist....after the Daytona 500, the #32 takes over the #6 owners points and will be guaranteed the next four races after the Daytona 500. This is all contingent on NASCAR's approval.(2-13-2012)

I don't know why this always bothers me as much as it does but it just doesn't seem right to me that you can buy your way into the D500 and then next four races after that. But, then again, I'm not a top 35 fan anyhow. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The rules in place prior to the top 35 rule worked just fine IMO. We weren't seeing top teams in the sport failing to qualify every week. Provisionals were in place to prevent that from happening and had you exhausted those, you'd better step back and reevaluate your program. For the most part, it was the fastest that qualified for the race. The top 35 has done far more to hurt the sport IMO than anything that it's done to help it. Evidence to that will be seen next Thursday @ 2pm when the green flag is thrown for the first or two qualifying races. Those of you that have been around long enough to see those races in the past know exactly what I'm talking about.

In 2007, there were over 50 fully sponsored cars trying to qualify for the Daytona 500. Now look what we have. I think the top 35 rule and the economy are to blame.

sad,Sad,Sad that the team that has 2 NASCAR Veteran Drivers on it feels the need to buy there way into the first five races of the year. Not much confidence there or have they lost their will to race and just want to be rolling billboards?Terry has done it enough that I know he just wants to be an advertiser.

This whole point swapping/trading/shareing/buying Top 35 BullChit has become completely out of control I really wish NASCAR would either supervise the playground or shut it down and go back to Real Meaningful Qualifying

I agree, I never like the top 35 rule, IMO if you aren't fast enough to keep up with the big boys, you don't belong there trying. The fastest 43 make the field....period.

When you work with an organization that blatantly is vague with its rules, it allows for all kinds of interpretation. The top 35 rule, though, has always stunk.

I liked the provisional system better. Fastest 38 start where they qualify and then the last 5 spots are by points. Only limit teams to using 5 or 6 provisionals a seasons. This top 35 rule is ridiculous, I recall a qualifying session a couple years ago at Talladega where the top 10 fastest qualifyiers were go or go home cars. Ended up seeing guys who qualifyied in the top 10 go home that is a joke. Also if the provisional system would of been in place I guarantee the top 35 teams would of taken qualifying seriously to make sure they earned a spot in the race.
