More GM Bull Sheot

That makes more sense. That sucks.

I'm pissed off something fierce. I'm not happy, I'm not cordial, I'm not nice, I'm not anything right now. And I shouldn't be. If it was because it was a manual and it was something I did where I left it in gear and red-lined it, it'd be one thing.

If you had DexCool in it when you had the intake leak that motor was doomed. Dex gets into the oil and Dex eats bearings. To have both blow at the same time????

If I was you I'd used tongs to hold it while going to the bathroom, seems everything you touch breaks.....
Sure you don't want this as your avatar??

Well that unusual, how did that happen?

I don't know, I'm not a mechanic. Car suddenly revved going about 70 and then, right as I started to slow down because it wasn't speeding up, it erupted in a plume of smoke.

I'm borrowing my father's van until I can get a new car/truck/SUV.

I think the transmission caused the motor problem, but I'm not sure. I had no warning that there was a transmission problem, it just broke.

Everything happens for a reason I guess. I learned one thing though, never buy a GM vehicle.

Andy no matter what you buy you will probably have issues...espically buying USED..You have no idea what the previous owner did to the vehicle...look in any service center bay, be it GM, Ford, Dodge, or any other...they all aren't there for oil changes...Buying used is a crap shoot

Yes. Maybe 2,000.

Reason I asked is every automatic I've owned that I changed the tranny fluid in within a couple months the tranny went bye bye. Last year a study came out stating it's best to never change the tranny fluid, seems the metal in the fluid helps keep the thing together longer. The reason I hate GM is because I once had a 82 Gran Prix the engine ceased at 61,000k and GM wouldn't touch it. But now I only drive sticks so I don't have to ever rebuild another tranny, maybe a clutch ever once in a while but not a transmission.

Also it's important to get a friend that's a good mechanic, one that does it for a living. Next car you get find one that has a car club. Having friends in a car club you can brainstorm when you have issues with it. Next car you buy take your mechanic with you to check it out.

Well, when the intake manifold broke, it had to be done.

what Blue said. Car clubs/forums help alot. Also get cheap stuff and nifty ideas. Like fitting a 3.8 taurus or HHR elec radiator fan inplace of my clutch fan (thus freeing power and known gains of 2MPG)

Why would they? In 1982 the Warranty's on new vehicles where Nothing like they are now, if I remember correctly GM in 82 had a 12 month 24,000 mile overall warranty. Today GM has a 10 year 100,000 mile Driveline Warranty.

3 years / 36,000 is what I remember. But I'm old,,,,:p

I don't beleive the 3/36 Bumper to Bumper came along till the late 80's? I know it was in place in 1990. Remember for years and years ALL makes only had 12 months 12k miles the world has certainly changed has'nt it :)

The 80's where a volatile time in my life and my memory is a lil fuzzy over the whole decade.

I also remember when it was a major accomplishment if a car that made to 100,000 miles.

My 89 GMC has hit 470,000. SAME TRANSMISSION. The original 305 couldn't pull a duckie on a string, replaced with a 383. That motor has over 350,000 miles, burns a little oil.. That truck made 10+ trips to Fla towing a race car.

With his luck Andy is the only guy I know who could walk into the Bunny Ranch with $10,000 in his pocket, come out broke and not get laid.

Damn, you got some bad vehicle luck

None of this would have ever happened if people paid attention to the road instead of their damn cell phones. My Toyota had just been fixed and easily had 20 years or more left on it. But it got wrecked two days after it was repaired and I got stuck with a GM.

I'm hoping to get another Corolla or a Camry but that's not looking likely.

How did you "get stuck" with a GM?????

Our old dually had at least 470 if not 570...back then, the odo only had 5 digits. It crossed the country 4 times pulling racecars, and all up and down california for the 6 years we had it out there, and we bought it off another racer that ran cross country with it. Now a guy has it for his toy hauler in louisiana.

Right now dad's ram 1500 has 275K with the original spark plugs and nothing other than routine maintenance (other than plugs obviously)

Bought it used in 84 still in warranty, warranty was 60,000 miles.

You must have bought a dealership or aftermarket warranty, I know the 84's factory warrantys where less than 3 yrs 36k miles.

Factory warranty's were transferable in the 80's? News to me. I'm not even sure aftermarket warrantys were around back then. Buy a used car from a dealer and 30 day/3,000 miles was the norm.

So, I decided to have the engine replaced. I paid for the new engine and the labor costs out of pocket a month ago. Now, the shop has decided they're not going to let me have my car back (a full month later, even though they said it was a two day job) until they get another $1,000.

If you think you have seen me pissed off, you ain't seen nothing yet.

For the record, the transmission wasn't blown, surprisingly. The oil pump was bad (an after effect of the intake manifold problem), which is something the shop that replaced the on board computer knew but refused to disclose.

This is war.

In California, by law they have to have you sign a repair order (or ok the work via phone) prior to beginning any repairs. The repair order has to have an estimated cost. There is a certain percent that the repair order can legally exceed the original estimate, but it's not an additional $1000.00
If there is nothing signed by you authorizing an additional $1000.00 beyond the original estimate then the repair facility is S.O.L.
They cannot charge you for additional unauthorized costs.
Your best bet is to pay the extra money with a check and write on the bottom of the check that you are paying the bill under duress. After you take posession of your vehicle then take the repair facility owner to small claims court. (Small claims here in California has a $7500.00 limit). If they don't have a signed repair order with an estimate then they are in violation of several laws and they will lose in court.
The reason that you pay now and get your car is because if you say you're not going to pay then they will remove parts or disable the vehicle.
This is California's "Write it Right" laws...> http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/ftp/pdfdocs/WriteItRight.pdf There may be a similar set of laws in your state so do some research.

Why would you pay up front the whole bill to have a engine replaced????????That is redonkulous.Everybody that I have seen do that with a shop gets screwed.

And keyword -> "Shop".

Sorry. individual 1-or-2 horse business with 1 bay door vs corrupt shenanigans, former wins

Any "mechanic" who tells me I've blown both the engine and trans at the same time I'd just thank him for his time and move on.
When you say new engine do you mean a brand new engine or a new to your car engine out of a wreck? Other than the labor to install there are other costs involved, oil, antifreeze, plugs, plug wires, filters, trans front seal, a/c charge and maybe even a odd sensor or two. But I don't think it would come close to adding up to another grand.
I lost my ALLDATA access so I can't say how many hours the 'book' gives to do a engine swap. My son and Matt put a used 3.8 motor [with 44,000 miles] in my wifes 98 Bonneville over a weekend in the driveway. Maybe 12 hours total.
