UPDATE:
Steven Lawayne Nelson broke a sprinkler head and caused courtroom flooding after he was sentenced to death.
Nelson had been taken out of the courtroom and put in a nearby holding area after Tuesday's sentencing. Proceedings were over but some people remained in the courtroom.
State District Judge Mike Thomas says Nelson somehow broke a sprinkler head in the holding cell. Water slowly started seeping into the courtroom, so deputies ordered everyone out.
EARLIER STORY:
A Fort Worth jury on Tuesday sentenced Steven Lawayne Nelson to death for killing a North Texas pastor.
Jurors last week found Nelson guilty of capital murder in the March 2011 killing of Rev. Clint Dobson inside NorthPointe Baptist Church in Arlington.
During closing arguments Tuesday prosecutors insisted Nelson deserves the death penalty because his crime was heinous and vicious. They said he killed Dobson and severely beat a church secretary because he wanted to steal a car.
Prosecutors also said Nelson has committed crimes since he was a young teen and has been given many chances to rehabilitate, but his crimes escalated. They say he killed an inmate while jailed before this murder trial.
However, defense attorneys asked jurors to spare Nelson's life. They said he was a neglected child who didn't get the help he needed.
Nelson, who maintained his innocence during the trial, faced either a death penalty or life in prison without parole.

What I hate are the ones who step up and say"he's had a bad childhood"or "he does drugs'.He did what he did now he needs to man up and accept his punishment.

Everyone has an excuse for everything. I was reading this article once about most deserved executions and some people were saying no one should be put to death or even locked away forever. According to some people everyone can be rehabilitated but that's just not true.

A lot of people grow up in some pretty rough situations and become incredibly good people. There is no excuse for killing someone in cold blood. It doesn't sound like he ever learned to take responsibilty for his actions, and now there is a large group of people who don't want him held accountable for even this.
