Another plane that doesn't get much attention is the F8 Crusader. The Crusader was built by the same company that built the F4U Corsair, which by the way even saw service in Viet Nam. Back to the F8, the Crusader was the first American aircraft to go faster than 1,000 mph and was a great fighter for the US Navy. Just over 1,200 of them were built and they were a hand full to fly, but those who could handle them loved them. They had a high mishap rate and were called at times "ensign killer" but this jet could fly with it's wings folded. The F8 Crusader was also called the "last gunfighter" because jets built after this were built without guns or cannons until much later. However, only four kills were accomplished with the guns. The rest of the kills were accomplished by Sidewinder missiles.
