Shepherd teams up with Victory Motorsports: With backing from Christian businessmen nationwide, Victory Motorsports will field driver Morgan Shepherd on the Nextel Cup Series for the entire 2006 season. The announcement was made Monday by Tony and Brian Mullet, two businessmen and brothers from Ohio, who are leading the effort. "This is a tremendously exciting time for me as a race car driver but is also tremendously exciting because of the possibilities in spreading the Gospel," said Shepherd, 64, who is becoming the oldest full-time driver in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series history. Shepherd has dedicated his career, as well as his life, to spreading the Gospel and the salvation story. He has competed in a car emblazoned with "Racing With Jesus." Shepherd is testing in Daytona Beach, Fla., through Wednesday, preparing for the Daytona 500 in February. Doug George is the crew chief of the #89 Dodge, and the team will be using Joey Arrington engines. "Our goal is to go down there and get this team off to a solid start," Shepherd said. "We want to be at least in the top 35 of the car owners' standings after the first five races (which guarantees starting positions for races following that), and build this team. We know we have a long way to go, but we have every intention of getting there." The Mullets, whose Dutch Quality Stone is based in Mt. Eaton, Ohio, are leading putting together a group of Christian businessmen who are backing Victory Motorsports financially, and are working to develop sponsorship. "This is a great opportunity for Christians to help promote salvation and to promote the importance of our Savior to the world through one of the best means possible - motorsports," said Tony Mullet. "We're encouraging other businessmen to join us, to promote and market their companies in the traditional sense but to also, in doing so, 'market' eternal life." Said Shepherd, "We have a lot of work ahead of us and it's going to be a tough road, but I'd rather start with nothing and have Jesus Christ on my side than start with millions and millions of dollars and not have Jesus. We want to run and run competitively but our main goal, our main focus, is educating as many people as we can about salvation and God's plan for them."(Williams Company PR), this team has nothing to do with the Victory Motorsports Racing team that is owned by former NFLer, Terrance Mathis and last heard from, was alligned with #4 Morgan-McClure Motorsports, but has not been heard from in a while.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, Thanks Kat. Wonder how many races he will finish????

That might be the single funniest post I have ever seen! Gonna race for jesus, huh? What if you lose? What is jesus gonna do bout that? I do understand that selling your deity is what it is all about.. but isn't this a bit much? Gonna put jesus on the car? What if jesus does not like it? What if Shepherd does win?
I can see the Wheaties box now... :)

Where have yopu been for the past few years? MS has had "Racing for Jesus" on his hood for a long time, until NASCAR told him he had to take it off.

His backers have the last name Mullet. Beautiful. Morgan wants to be in the top 35 in owners points after 5 races. See, he has to make those five races. Doubt it will happen.

They made him take it off in like 2000 or 2001 on his Truck, but not to long after that they said he could put it back on there. It was on his Cup car in 2003,4,5

I'm with you, Betsy. This is funny.

Sure I think Jeffy is by faaaar the best driver of em all.
As for anything he says after winning... Political correctness might have something to do with that.
Betsy ;)

Or, something that he truly believes in. ;)

I don't understand or see what is funny about that....maybe you 2 see something that I dont.

Dale Earnhardt once said "i am thankfull for a lot of things that most ppl dont have or never will have, but it dont matter what you have to be happy, all you need is family, friends and church"

Educating people about 'salvation and God's plan for them' by driving a race car?

It's a way to get the message out to people that may not see it anywhere else. I don't think its just an AD thing to make money, i truly belive they are doing this is a posative way.

Positive way? Positively silly is what I think it is! Do you honestly think there is anyone that can READ that does not already know what will be written on the car?
I am sure it is simply another method of getting THEIR deity out in front of more folks! Remember these folks are spending OTHER peoples money! So as long as they spend it they get their regular salary... If they do not spend that money someone else will take their place. On a race car god ain't no different than whisky!
Just a thought...If race'n for god works I think I will sart steal'n for god.. that might work too! What do you think?
Betsy

I don't want to criticize or judge anyone. But Morgan Sheperd wants to drive a race car. That is the bottom line. Not just any race car. A NASCAR race car. That does not come cheap. If all he wanted to do was convert people to his beliefs, he could do it for a lot less.

But I respect him and wish him well. He needs some luck. Will his sponsor be able to provide it?

Although I never heard them, I wonder what vows Gordon swore to before god when he got married. Probably something like " til death due us part". Last time I noticed, Brooke was still alive.

And now we're bringing Gordon into it. Why not go through every NASCAR driver? Who's next? Dale Jarrett? Maybe even bring 'you-know-who' into it? Divorced more than once. Oh yes. The devil is having a party. :D

Well, now we are getting all carried away. What is wrong with Morgan's beliefs and using his race car to show he is sincere???? He is not ashamed to "'Believe" and neither am I. If he can help even one more person to seek salvation, he has done what he desires the most. Along with his wish to win a race, of course. I say, "MORE POWER" to him!!!!!!!
Racing for Jesus is wonderful!!!!

Gotta go along with Bump and Lappy on this!!!!!

It is an advertisement! What is pasted on the car ain't gonna help him win. Same as whisky or breakfast ceral.. If having jesus on the car helps him to win you will see jesus plastered on every car the next sunday! It is an ad attempting to SELL something.. In this case it is not the usual, it is a particular religion.. If he does not win a single race will that tell us something?
I just think it is in poor taste for a religious group to advertise in such a manner. Seems the sign in front of the church would be good enough.

If you don't like it, don't watch. Just leave your radio or TV off until after the opening prayer and when they introduce Morgan.

For someone who says religion is a waste of time, you sure do bring it up and bitch about it enough. Morgan is doing something he believes in. Its his car, he do with it or put whatever he wants on it as he pleases even if it gets your panties in a wad. I think for the past several years he spent his own money building and racing his car. He didn't even have a pit crew for a truck race he was in one year. He now has an owner who shares the same beliefs and is putting the same message on it.

Some people would complain that the sky is blue and the grass is green.
