Who in your opinion is the most improved driver since last year? Here's a couple of the things the guys listed in the poll above did this year:

Kevin Harvick - Current 2003 Standings: 3rd in points race 2002 Standings: 21st
Terry Labonte - 2003: 9th 2002: 24th
Dale Earnhardt Jr - 2003: 2nd 2002 : 11th
Bobby Labonte - 2003: 7th 2002: 16th
Joe Nemechek - 2003: 26th 2002: 34th
Robby Gordon - 2003: 13th 2002: 20th
Steve Park - 2003: 31st 2002: 33rd
Michael Waltrip - 2003: 10th 2002: 14th
Ward Burton - 2003: 19th 2002: 25th

Harvick's stats are a little flawed, because he missed a race last season, due to the suspension. And seeing as how Harvick contended in 2001, I wasnt surprised that he would be back to form.

#1 would be Terry Labonte. Talk about a turn-around. A lot of credit should go to Jim Long as well for it.

#2 would definitely be Robby Gordon. When Childress hired him in 2002 they were calling for his head. Midway through the season he was 30th in points and people thought Robby would be fired. A little over a year later and Robby is settled solidly in the #31 competing for a top 10 in the point standings.

I would also have to say Terry Ladonte. He has made a major come back over the last 4 to 5 years. :D

Mikey!

Last year he was exstremly close to losing the ride, becasue of nad performance. This year he is contending for wins at more places than Dega and Daytona

Terry Labonte, with Waltrip a close second. If it was the last 2 years, then Waltrip, but he had a decent year 2002.

A lot depends on what some define as "improved".

Terry LaBonte has had his credentials established for a loooooooooong time. He has not improved. His team has.

Kevin Harvick. Improved from what and to what?? From being a "here I come, get outa my way" driver with a surly attitude to a more, at times, composed driver with better team communication. Don't forget he went from Greg Biffle to Ricky Rudd. He has the ability and his "improvement" comes at the hand of team communication and owner guidance.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. definitely decided if he were going to be a force to be reckoned with in this series, it could not be on name alone. He now understands results are necessary. The ability is there, the desire was absent and a higher priority placed on party time than racing. Junior has changed all that.

Bobby LaBonte. What change?? Some bad luck and lousy calls but his talent and ability are on the top of the heap. Change?? Improvement ??? People go from heroes to zeros in evry occupation and endeavor. Most of the things that have happened to Bobby this year year are out of his control.

Joe Nemechek went from mediocre cars to top line equipment. There goes the theory Hendrick gives Gordon the best and uses the other teams for
R & D.

Robbie Gordon. Went from chief antagonizer to "hang on, we might win this" and has shown some improvement but still has a long way to go. His good finishes are pit strategy and "go ahead and cry. I'll do it my way". Now, if he just wouldn't over drive the car...............

Steve Park has had so much unfortunate stuff happen he holds the championship title of "Mr. Unfortunate". Hate to say it but Steve has lost a bit of his edge and it isn't all because of team communication or equipment. And that is sad.

Ward Burton. If there is a wreck on the track, look to see if Ward is in it. Why is it this guy is in the middle of more accidents not of his making than anyone else ??? There is ability there but he sure does know how to find trouble. As an old wag (97Forever) said in another thread, FoMoCo should give BDR proper funding, keep Wad in the car and let him go do his thing. Maybe they should put a GPS system in to help Wad find his way out of potential danger. Just a suggestion. :D

And for the most improved driver, my bid goes to Michael Waltrip.

What can you say about improvement ??? This guy has spent twenty years honing his skills and finally, finally, is showing something for those twenty years of practicing with everybody elses money, time and equipment. If his name were not Waltrip, would anyone else have given him so many chances?? So far he is having a good year. Only time will tell if he will retained enough from all those years of practice. Somehow, I get the feeling if he had a different personality, and last name, he woulda been out of a ride before he ever started in the WCS.

Now these are my opinions. Please feel free to share yours.

Share my opinions?I am the southeastern distributor of opinions man!(Ok---even if 50% of them are proven wrong...)

Mike Waltrip??My buddy/sparring partner Whiz sure took the easy way out with that response.Of course Phil Par---er--I mean Mikey is improved this year. However when you have set his 'standard of sub-standard performance' over your career,'up' is the only direction to go after all.He couldn't have got much worse than is typical of his record.

Now...another easy answer would be Harvick.Yeah...up to third and dropping in the points is pretty good. But don't fool yourself into thinking he is up to the level of the other young guns on the scene now:Newman,Busch and Johnson. He may have improved.....but not to the point of being able to drive with those three.Like Chad Little said after he knocked Kevin to the ground:'He talks better than he drives'.Yeah,he does.Stats might support him,but skill level doesn't.

Terry Labonte...nah.He never impressed me when he was in his prime.Just more evidence of this weird Chevrolet dominated season.Nemechek and Terry Labonte win the same amount of races to this point as Gordon and Stewart?I like those guys, but this atypical 'anybody in a Chevy can win season' has saved them this year.Dont expect either to win again.

So after critiquing(cant be spelled) all these nice guys who do I think is the most improved driver of this season?

Hands down,no question about it:

Robby Gordon.(Pay no attention to Whizzer's over drive the car remark :p .)

This guy always could drive anything.Every turn of the wheel this year has seemed more controlled and composed.Seems like he is finally driving up to his potential. He is good and getting better. And sorry to Kevin's fans:But RG is the top driver at RCR,imo.

So there.Opinions--maybe not worth a plugged nickle but that is my two cents!

(and hey Bowtie:notice I didnt mention one single Ford driver?) :p

Okay, here's my $.02. I personally think two Winston Cup championships is impressive. How many other active drivers can lay claim to even one championship, let alone two? (The answers, FYI, are 6 and 1.) As for Nemechek, he has three wins in the big show - not just one - and the other two came with Felix Sabates (before Ganassi) and Andy Petree, two perennial mid-packers. So I don't consider this year's win to be a fluke. And I DO expect both drivers to win again before their careers are over.

Yeah Strids...not be disagreeable, but Terry's record cant hold a candle to the other drivers in his age group--his peers if you will.I like Terry and always have, don't get me wrong, but is he a Martin,Wallace,Jarrett or Elliott?Nah.Titles are nice but they arent everything,IMO.Gordon's got more than Bobby Allison after all.Not the defining mark of a drivers career by any means. At least they shouldn't be.

As for Joe?I think he is a class act but a big time winner?Nope. Not now,not ever.

Chances are real strong that neither of these guys---and maybe not Rusty,Mark or Dale---will ever win again. This is an era of superstars again and one or two wins a season(like Terry or Ricky Rudd)just arent going to make it long.

In this brave new sponsor tight world of Nextel Cup,I have a feeling you better win big and often or walk.

Again,just my opinions.

Nice post 97Forever. A bit of a surprise to see some signs of factual knowledge and well presented.

I agree, Robbie is the best driver in the Childress stable. He does tend to lose control and over drive the car when he lets his temper get the best of him.

Michael Waltrip is the most improved driver, even though the accolade is offered tongue-in-cheek by the ole Whizzer.
A: he has won three WC races. (two time Daytona 500 winner)
B: his lifetime average in the WCS is; 561 starts, 3 wins; 31 top 5's; 104 top 10's and an average finishing position of 20.5.

His biggest increase in stats came this year. Thus making him the most improved driver in 2003.

By comparison to the number of years Michael has been practicing his craft, RobbyG is a "newbie" and although he has two wins in 2003 compared to one for Michael, Waltrip's overall finish average for the year is higher.

I believe Jimmie johnson has matured and become one of the top racers in nascar

Well, although I am staying off of this horse I am mildly amused that you didn't name "Elf Ears" in your post. ;) B)
