The mother of two NASCAR drivers and five other adults suffered minor injuries Saturday when their golf cart flipped over at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, officials reported.
Four people were transported to local hospitals as a precaution, but the mother of race-car drivers Kyle and Kurt Busch refused transport, Avondale Deputy Fire Chief Steve Ellsworth said.
Ellsworth said the driver of the customized six-passenger golf cart was coming down a hill in an access tunnel and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to flip.
Ellsworth said the golf-cart driver was not speeding at the time of the accident.
Kyle Busch won Saturday’s Dollar General 200 Nationwide Series race as part of this weekend’s NASCAR races at the track on 115th Avenue.
Kurt Busch tweeted Saturday afternoon that his mother was injured in a crash.
“Don't get in any moving vehicle w/ my mom,” Busch’s tweet read. “She was involved in a crash in the tunnel b4 the end of the race. She will be ok, just a little banged up.”
The 230-foot-long tunnel is built beneath the NASCAR track and allows easy access for race crews and fans to the infield and track.
