(Sky News) - A Florida mother was being investigated after she posted a photograph on the internet of her 11-month-old son apparently smoking a cannabis bong, Sky News reported Friday.

The image was circulated on the web and came to light after a shocked viewer sent it to Florida's WJXT News.

It shows a baby in a diaper with the green, glass smoking instrument at his mouth as if he were inhaling.

His 19-year-old mom, from Keystone Heights, Fla., defended her actions, claiming there were no drugs or tobacco in the bowl, and her child was not breathing in smoke.

But child protection officers from the Florida Department of Children and Families launched an inquiry into her actions.

"We are alarmed that any parent would take pictures of their child next to what is obviously drug paraphernalia," said spokesman John Harrell.

He said the unnamed woman could face serious charges if drugs were used by, or found near, the baby.

The mother talked to WJXT via the social networking site Facebook, and insisted the pictures were a joke.

She said: "If u look at the picture u can see that there is no bowl in the TABACCO pipe.

"And i took a pic to show one (expletive) person and it was a mistake. I would never ever ever let him get high."

The mom said that as part of the investigation she was ordered to take a drugs test, and her son was being checked by doctors.

She added: "Do you realize how serious this is? i can go to jail and he can be taken away from me. WHY would you do something so (expletive) stupid?

"i know what i did was stupid but i would NEVER put by baby in harm. im so nice to everyone idk (I don't know) why you would do this to me."

Gawd, can't you people take a joke anymore? When I was 7, my dad used to send me into the house to get him a beer. Any number of people saw me walking outta the house with an open bottle of beer in one hand. Noone called the cops on us.

I can laugh at a 7 year old carrying a beer to dad but a 11 month old with a bong in his mouth C'mon thats a little far to go for a joke.

Prof, every weekend during the summer, my grandparents would load me, a case of beer, and the dog into the car and head for their little fishing house.
My job, at 6-7-8 was to bring them a beer when they needed one. As a reward, I got the first sip. No one ever turned a hair --- not even my parents when they came down.

So what do you think about this one Prof.

GRAPEVINE, Texas - A North Texas couple is charged with letting their toddler son play with a bong filled with lit marijuana, according to police.

A witness said 20-year-old Julio Cesar Garcia inhaled smoke from the bong, then passed it to his 13-month-old son, who put his mouth on the end of the device.

The unidentified witness also said the baby played with marijuana in the bowl.

Garcia is charged with endangering a child and possession of marijuana and is held on $3,000 bond.

The baby's mother, Brenda Duran, was allegedly in the room at the time and did nothing to stop the action. Police arrested her on one count of endangering a child, and held her on $2,000 bond.

The baby is with Garcia's mother while CPS investigates and police continue their probe

I'll be honest with you ... the 'playing with' matters less to me than the fact that there was marijuana in the house. fin. That you have 'witnesses' attesting to it i find disingenuous. There's are few 'innocent witnesses' in a room with a lit bong full of pot.

A bong is nothing without pot anymore than an empty beer bottle out of my recycle bin. There are stores that sell that sort of thing at the mall. They're not closed down because a bong is no more to most people than a glass oil lamp. A room decoration. Put pot in it ... and the problem isn't the bong, it's still the pot.

So the problem is the pot that "jumped" into the bong?

not to jump in between a good discussion but what's with the unidentified witness? the mother, father and son are known. i hope they have something more than heresay from an unidentified witness to charge those folks. like maybe some real evidence?

GRAPEVINE — Three years ago, images of two young boys smoking marijuana in North Texas made headlines around the world.

Now, police say, it appears that a similar scenario has played out again — this time involving a Grapevine father and his 13-month-old son.

Officers arrested 20-year-old Julio Garcia, who is old enough to know better than to allegedly give his one year old son a bong. The child's mother, Brenda Duran, was also arrested for doing nothing to stop it.

Grapevine police said a witness told investigators the father was smoking marijuana and then put the bong in the baby's mouth.

Neighbors at the upscale apartment complex where Garcia and Duran live cannot believe this happened right under their nose.

"I think that's absolutely ridiculous," said Justin Wilkerson. "That should have never happened. It's a 13-month-old baby. Obviously, weed is illegal for a reason."

"It's not only that," said Grapevine police Lt. Todd Dearing. "It's the whole environment of the child being around the marijuana smoking on a daily basis, that's also a part of this case of endangering a child."

Garcia faces a marijuana possession charge.

Police said the baby is doing okay. He's back home at the same apartment with his grandparents, who were in a different room when the incident happened. No one at the apartment was willing to talk to News 8 about the alleged incident.

Garcia and Duran were still in police custody on Tuesday, and could spend up to two years in jail for child endangerment if convicted
