multiple tires....?

a long time ago one of my neighbors was a race car driver
i was about 5 at this point, so its a vague memory. But one day we were watching a race at my friends house, and the dad was telling us about how the winner had 6 tires on his car when he finished the race.
is this possible... does anyone have an idea what he was talking about? or is my memory skewed?
any info would help because me bringing up this topic started a arguement between my friends

Could have been running duelies I guess. :) But I really bet it was dad just saying that because of the way the winner of that race ran compared to the others. :D
 
im not into racing and i have no idea what duelies means
could u explain?
 
Duelies are vehicles with four tires on the back axle...........like those one ton bucket trucks you see the telephone or cable guys driving around. :) I was being silly. I'm pretty sure your friends dad was speaking "tongue in cheek" when he said the car had six tires on it. I know I've seen some racing where the winner won and I thought he had some magic back there too. :)
 
6 tires?? Some one was pulling your leg, Joe.

That reminds me to send out a special thanks to my dad,BTW:

Dump trucks really DONT have collapsible wings under their chassis to stabilize them at high speeds. Very damn funny Dad. And thanks...I was 35 before I finally found out. :angry:
 
No leg pulling goin on Joe, he was RIGHT!

It was in the Open Wheel Category, and the car was an ELF! 4 rear tires and 2 front. I had a track car elf and kicked butt back in the late 70's with that speed deamon, but I don't think the car itself did all that well in real life racing.
 
Actually 97, there have been 6 wheel cars built and raced. I will post a photo of a model built of a Tyrell racing F-1 car built by Ken Tyrrell in 1976. the car was not as good as he had hoped. There have also been 6 wheel sprint cars (1950s)

Thanks Flame... that is just what my trac car looked like, and everybody thought I WAS CRAZY!
 
If you are telling me you had one of these, I would have to see it to believe it Kat. This is a Formula One car from Tyrrell Racing. You would have to been an F-1 Driver to have one! Jackie Stewart, Ronnie Peterson, ect.. ;)
 
Man, I thought we were talking about race cars!! Didn't know F1 counted!! :)

Six tires, huh? Wonder what pit stops looked like!! :D
 
I beilve there was a 6 wheel car at the Indy 500 before as well. Maybe in the early 1920s-1940s not sure exactly.
