NASCAR adds more drivers to Bud Shootout

Looks like the 7th Ford is listed as the 38 team, with those points now listed as the 96 team? I thought the 38's points were going to the 98? Trust me, I like it that they are going to the 96 instead of the 98.

The way I read it, Bobby gets in now as well as Tony! Woot! :beerbang:

They also list the 7 as a Dodge. Thought he was switching to Toyota. Who would be the 7th Dodge? Is there a 7th Dodge? :sarcasm:

The list is based on 2008 owner points and specifies 2008 team affiliations.

I guess the 7th Dodge would be Kyle Petty.:D

They might as well just call it the Tony Stewart rule.

NASCAR sucks

Where is the Bush Clash when you need it? I thought this race was sort of a REWARD for past performance.. Might as well put the rest of the field fillers in there and give out points..

Just let every one in then  I hear Morgan Shephard feels left out

Nascar is scrambling as usual to generate fan interest, to try to put bodies in the stands. It will be a long painful season as far attendance goes I'm afraid. The Bud shoot out used to be a cool race, but now there are too many gimmicks to make it worthy of a must see race for me.

maybe it's just me but i was formerly under the impression that the Bud Shootout was an event for the previous seasons pole winners. i honestly don't understand whats going on now???

same here. now it seems nascar is emulating professional wrestling (cough) style promotions.

Yea I read that this morning, and I can barely understand it.

Reads like lawyerspeak.

RPK, last year Budweiser decided to change the format to the top 6 cars of each make. They did this because they were no longer the Pole sponsor, and they figured it didn't make PR sense to have the Bud Shootout for Coors pole winners.

This just shows how people hate change. If the Bud Shootout had started out as a race of the top 6 cars of each make and then changed to the pole winners, people would be shaking their heads saying that so and so should have made it, just because he didn't have a pole isn't a good reason to keep him out of this race. It's been this way forever.

Just as the Chase, this new format will undoubtedly generate more and more criticism of NASCAR, even though the change in format was Budweiser's and not NASCAR.

Buck,
back when the shootout was established GM had Chevy, Pontiac, Olds and Buicks, Ford had Merc's, Dodge had Plymouths running. IIRC, correct me iffin I'm wrong.
Taking into account all makes with the top 6 of each eligible back then, if there was 6, that could therorically mean 48 cars.
Winner of a pole in the previous year plus a champ provisional brought meaning to the race.
Na$car changed the rules (duh like that's never happened before) so that those who played musical cars would be allowed to enter.

btw, when Bud decided to leave Na$car could have said to Coors this is they way it'll be if you want to sponsor it, if not that's ok. But greed entered the picture. Na$car's getting real good at grabbing their ankles for cash,,,,,

They could care less about true fans.

They could care less about true fans.

I suspect that you mean they couldn't care less, but you are caught up in the denigration of the english language so I will let that one pass.

Once again, it wasn't NASCAR's decision to change the rules, only to allow them. Budweiser is still the sponsor of this pre-season race and therefore has total control. But evidently you don't see it that way, and so be it. You are just following in the footsteps of other negative NASCAR fans. It's a trend these days. If you feel you can do something about it, just drop NASCAR a line and I'm sure they will get back to you. Remember, they could care less and I'm sure they would if they had to. :)

Come on Buck you have to admit that Nascar is doing anything they can to generate more fan interest. Not having Tony in the shootout was not what they wanted, so once again THEY changed the rules. If you think for one minute it was Budweisers' choice to change the rules, you are surpisingly naive to this fact. Nascar has the final say, even though this is a non point race, it is their track. All the PR people, marketing exects, and sponsors want big names in this race to attract fans. I truly feel Nascar has the final say in "changing the rules".;);) Of course I could be wrong, if I am I will humbily retreat to my corner.

Really? Total control? You might want to rethink that statement.
Oh yeah, you don't think that NASCAR will bow down to what Bud says in this economical environment? Listen, NASCAR, as well as any of the team owners, are willing to bow down and kiss any sponsors butt to keep the money there. AND remember, it's in Budweiser's interest to make for a more viewed race as well.

The current muck that NASCAR has found itself is exactly what I'm talking about here. Sponsors have been given more and more say-so in not just where they go, but who is where and on what team. We see in the series not just one, but three whiskey sponsors who were for years and years more or less banned from the series. Why? Because NASCAR didn't want them there. If it wasn't for the big bucks that JD, Crown Royal and Jim Beam bring into the sport, they would still be on the outside looking in.

NASCAR will do anything to keep Budweiser in the sport...ANYTHING!

Buck,
Isn't it too early in the morning to be drinking that much kool-aid?
Na$car wanted X amount more from Craftsman to continue as the truck series sponsor.
Na$car wanted X amount more from A-B to continue as the Busch series sponsor.

How'd they do? Both left. Na$car scrambled to get replacements, it was rumored they got more and paid less than the previous sponsors.

Na$car has a unique business model, you play by their rules and appease their demands or you don't play at all. It's that simple.

Big Bill threatened the drivers they would never race again if they formed a union in 1961. Richard Petty tried again in 1969, boycotting the first 'Tega race due to tire problems. France couldn't have cared less about driver safety, he cobbled together a motley group and ran the race without the "stars' of the day. He killed the PDA.

Na$car is nothing more than a big bully, someday a 98 pound weakling will bloody their nose.:beerbang:

SST55, when Big Bill was in charge, things were quite different in NASCAR. Even when his son took over, it was still a NASCAR thing, but when the sponsors began moving in and technology took over, it meant that more and more money was needed. As long as teams could get that big money, NASCAR still was the dictator of everything, but when the sponsors began to waver, so did NASCAR. I'll take NASCAR as it was when Big Bill was the boss any time over what we have now, but what we have now is what we can take or leave.

NASCAR today is not nearly as strong as it was 20 years ago. Now, if you have the money, NASCAR will court you.

Well, unfortunately, Tony is taking most of the heat for this decision. I also read that Robby IS going to drive a Dodge even though he'll be racing in a Toyota this year. They added something to allow what he drove in 2008 to count. Go figure.

This might add a little to the power of NASCAR and integrity of Big Bill France.
Although times are different today than during the era in this book, the premise is still the same. Big Bill France took care of NASCAR and according to author Brian Donovan, there was a time his word didn't mean much.

Now, if you have the money, NASCAR will court you.
It's not about having money - it's them spending the money in the series.

NASCAR is a business. They're there to make money. So, of course they're going to work with the teams and sponsors who invest the time and money to run in their series weekly.

Would you, as a business owner, court those who may or may not invest the time and money in your business next week or would you court those you KNOW will invest in your business tough times or not?

I don't have a problem with Tony gettin in..... I mean he would have qualified under the old format as a former winner......... but the fact they are just fillin spots, messin with the format....... I mean before it was the fastest of last year when it started...... Then they added a few cars ( second round fastest qualifier, past winners etc.....) and invert at halfway...... those were the days...... few laps, break in middle, invert and go for broke...... drivers like Dale, Waltrip, Wallace, etc..... it was a good show.
Now what is it like 70 laps??? 30 cars???? heck throw in the rest of the field fillers, and call it the mini 500.......lol.

Exactly it has become a farce!

The old format was pole winners not race winners.:beerbang:
Which translated into who was fastest. ;)

There was a clause for previous winners of the shoot-out for a certain amount of years as of last year's Shootout. That's where the "previous winners" came from. I remember certain drivers talking about it being the last year they would get that provisional.

From 2001 until last year, the race was open to fastest qualifiers, AS WELL as PREVIOUS SHOOTOUT WINNERS........ that was the race winner qualification that I meant..... of which it would have allowed Tony Stewart and MARK MARTIN in....... as it is, no Mark, not much interest for me.....
